Term 4 | Week 6 | 18 November 2022
“But since you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you – see that you also excel in this grace of giving.”
2 Corinthians 8:7
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
On Monday 15 November we took time to induct our 2022-23 Secondary Student Leadership Team at St Mary’s Church. Rev Greer led a beautiful service which focused on message of the Beatitudes from Matthew’s Gospel. The students were reminded that leadership is ultimately about generously giving your time and talent in the service of others. As part of the ceremony all of Year 11 were recognised as the senior year of the College and presented with their Year 12, 2023 badge. In my address I asked each student to reflect their own capacity and the potential to inspire others and model the Beatitudes for all members of the community. I also asked them to remember that leadership is about helping, doing and being with rather than telling, directing and standing apart from others.
As part of their induction, the leaders made the following Pledge of Office:
As the elected leaders of the student body, we acknowledge and accept the privilege and responsibility that comes with the office we undertake. We pledge to undertake this office with generosity, commitment and integrity; to use our God given gifts to serve the staff, students and friends of the Emmanuel Anglican College Community and to call on the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit to ensure that all that we do is done in God’s name.

OFF THE DEPUTY'S DESK
Shrek: Ogres are like onions.
Donkey: They stink?....
Shrek: No. Layers. Onions have layers. Ogres have layers. Onions have layers. You get it? We both have layers.
Donkey: Oh, you both have layers. Oh. You know, not everybody like onions.
And in a sense, last week could have been called Onion Week at EAC with so many layers coming together to create this busy time.
A hectic sports schedule included the College hosting the Living School in a Primary Inter-School Basketball Competition. This involved students from all four of our primary basketball teams and was a wonderful way of sharing our Lindsay Walker Centre with others in the community.
Peeling back another layer was a very successful day for EAC in Coffs Harbour at the inaugural North Coast Anglican Schools Country Week Competition. With numerous sports in play our students were successful in netball, golf and tennis.
A more formal layer was the Year 6 Celebration night at St Mary’s Church where the College and parents acknowledged the journey they have travelled in their Primary education and the step they are about to take into Secondary school.
This event shared the night with the End of Year Concert for the Year 3 to 5 Band. One of our challenges as we grow is how to find enough days and nights for all the events and celebrations in our busy calendar!
The Sustainability Action Group organised two events to celebrate National Pollinator Week, including a Bake Sale supported by the Market Garden class and the planting of 'flower bombs' of native flowers in un-appreciated areas of the school.
With all this activity it is great to be able to relax in our newly appointed area outside the Joan Pickup Library. A huge thanks to our Maintenance team for all the great work they do in beautifying our grounds.
And that was Onion Week…

Fun Basketball Friendlies with The Living School
On Tuesday, EAC hosted the Living School in some friendly games of primary basketball. It was fantastic to see the students compete against one of our neighbouring schools with such sportsmanship and respect.
EAC was fortunate enough to come away with victories in each of the encounters, however the Year 5/6 Boys game was a nail-biter going down to the wire, with EAC eventually winning by just one point!
Thank you to our student referees Abe Tasker, Ben Morgan and Oscar Priivald for officiating the games and to the Living School for travelling to EAC.

All the World's a Stage for Year 11 Drama Students
Earlier this year our Year 11 Drama students took part in the prestigious Shakespeare Carnival which brings recognition and competition to performing arts throughout NSW and the ACT.
Most impressively, our EAC students achieved first place titles in both the Physical Theatre and Group Devised categories.
To acknowledge this extraordinary achievement, the students were given the great privilege of an in-person workshop with renowned actor, director, producer and writer Chris Tomkinson. Mr Tomkinson travelled from Sydney to EAC for the experience and challenged our students with thought provoking activities that inspired their creativity.
Through this highly coveted experience, our Year 11 students are now brimming with ideas and boasting new skills ready to implement in their HSC works.

AND THE WINNERS ARE...
Thank you to our Primary Poets for competing in our Book Fair Poetry Competition. The entries were of such a high calibre that choosing the winners was an exquisitely arduous process. Each winner will receive a $15 voucher to spend in the Book Fair this week.
Without further ado, the winners are...
All winners receive a $15 Book Fair Voucher to be collected from the Library desk on Monday.
At that special time each day
The library whisks me away
To a place where dragons are real wherever you look
And all you’ll need is a book
Choices are endless
In this safe place
You don’t need an apprentice
To read about Stace
And her babysitting view
Or have the sorting hat debate
What house is right for you
But the most important thing of all
Is the one that does it all
Our librarian
Utterly adored

A book is a look into as world of magic,
A world that can be happy, sad, or even tragic,
A book is a look into a world of facts,
Science, history or even Maths,
A book is a look into a world down under,
A mystical, strange world where pirates plunder
Ava Schubert (4B)
My family has a heart of gold,
together hand in hand we grow old.
My mother is as pretty as a flower
with her I feel great power,
She doesn't care when I do her hair
or give her a DEATHLY STARE
My father is as funny as a clown
he barely ever wears an angry frown
I love him more than he knows
so I hope this poem kinda shows.
My little brothers can be lame,
but I love them just the same
When they scrunch up my drawings
I'll scream and yell "you're so annoying!"
My dog Leo is the best
He's so calm we can even bring him to the Flowerfest!
He loves to rest and have fun
but most of all he loves to run!
I love my family loads and loads
and they love me back I already know

Meanwhile, our younger Primary students have been showing off their colouring in prowess with the winners selected by our Year 5 Library Monitors. Congratulations to the following students who will also each receive a $15 voucher for the Book Fair;

Bring on the Books! And the Stationery! And the Posters!
Can you hear those squeals of delight? That is the sound of EAC students delighting at the news that our Term 4 Book Fair will commence on Tuesday 22 November and go right through to Friday 2 December. Just in time for Christmas!

Canteen Cookup
CANTEEN MOVING TO END OF YEAR MODE
A reminder that as the College year comes to an end, the Canteen will be cutting back on ordering so that excess stock is not held over the Christmas break.
As stock sells out, items will be removed from School Stream. Never fear though, fan favourites 'chicken goujons' and 'mini beef pies' will continue to be available to the very end!
The last of Canteen for 2022 is Friday 2 December.
Thank you for your continuing support of the Canteen in 2022.

How To EAC

How to... Pick Up Your Child Early
From time to time students will need to depart before the end of the College day for an appointment, a trip away or other family commitment. For these planned absences, it is important to advise the College with as much notice as possible so we can help your child be ready for pick up and take note of their safe departure.
Please email details of the planned absence to attendance@eac.nsw.edu.au. For students in Kindergarten, Year 1, 2 and 3, please also write a brief, signed note regarding the absence for your child to hand to their teacher. For students in Years 4 to 12, please note your permission for the absence in their Planner. This makes it easy for your child to demonstrate your permission and for teachers to plan for you child's departure.

Family Flavours
Our EAC students take great delight in sharing their family traditions with their friends and we plan our activities to support this as much as possible. This week together we learned how to make the Columbian treat 'arepas' which are flatbread made from corn. There were lots of 'chefs kiss' moments together with lots of messy moments, fun moments and, wonderfully, moments of pride as students' shared their family's version of 'yum'.

Prizes, Pizza and a Party
It was wonderful to share the Year 6 Celebration Night with our Primary school leaders last week. As their years in Primary School come to an end, it was time to celebrate. The night started with formalities at St Mary's Church in Ballina where the families shared a special Year 6 Celebration Chapel service. The Academic and Special awards were presented and Samuel Mooney wowed us with an original song "2040 Date". Our Primary Captains, Alexandra Kent and Henry Drew, spoke on behalf of the Year 6 students and reflected on their years in the Primary School. The families enjoyed a slide show that featured the Year 6 student's Kindergarten portraits and we all had a great laugh at how much they've all changed over the years. After the service, it was a quick costume change and back to the Discovery Centre for dinner and a disco. The students (and staff) danced the night away, tried their best at limbo and took heaps of photos in the photo booth. It was a wonderful night and a fitting way to finish off Primary School.

Secondary Students Get 'Real World Ready'
Reduce Risk - Improve Student Knowledge (RRISK) Seminars
Each year the Northern NSW Local Health District run their RRISK seminars for EAC students and this week was out Year 11 students turn to participate. Facilitated by Paul Dillion, Director of Drug and Alcohol Research and Training, the seminar shone a light on risk taking and current trends on youth drug use and gave students valuable skills in caring for both themselves and their friends in tricky situations. As well, students participated in a safe driving session and a cognitive function test that gave them and gained a deeper understanding of the impact that multitasking has on making decisions. Students listened to the story of a victim of road trauma and the impact that this has had on her life since her experiences. Practical sessions included students role playing scenarios where they learnt how to place someone in the recovery position and help someone in an emergency. These sessions were a great reminder to young drivers of the importance and safe driving and the range of risks that exist.
Preparing our Peer Support Leaders
Our Year 10 students are currently preparing to serve as Peer Support Leaders in 2023. Students are learning how to make better connections, be great leaders and how to best support others in the EAC Community. These sessions have created opportunities for lots of discussion and have demonstrated the impressive level of leadership capacity within this cohort.
Student Representative Council Selection Process
We are currently working to select the 2023 Student Representative Council (SRC) members from the Secondary School for each House. Under the leadership of SRC President Eliza Grosser, students in each House have had the opportunity to nominate to represent their House and give a speech. It has been wonderful to see the number of students willing to take on leadership positions at the College and the importance of student voice.
Student Focus Groups
This week, students representing Years 7-10 met with Ms Middleton to provide their valuable feedback and thoughts about a number of facets of the Secondary school. Feedback directly from students on what they feel works well as well as identifying opportunities for improvement is a crucial part of the College's evolution and we are always impressed and proud of the respectful insights provided. Finding from these focus groups will be reviewed and implementation plans developed ready for a great 2023. Thank you to all students for their involvement and feedback.

Director of the Secondary School

Duke of Edinburgh Adventure
Over the weekend 14 Year 9 students completed their Adventurous Journey component of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. This took place in the Gold Coast hinterland over 2 days and 1 night which tested students, strength, resolve and commitment. The trip inspired a spirit of adventure and discovery in unfamiliar and challenging environments. Our adventurers had to set and work towards achieving goals while developing skills such as communication, organisation, decision making and teamwork. Everyone completed the long trek through the bush, crossing and swimming in natural creeks, camping, canoeing and more. It was fantastic to see the group work together, have fun and overcome physical and mental challenges side by side.
A huge thank you to Ms Daniela Payne. Ms Payne's everlasting positive energy and effort helped all succeed over the two days. Thanks also to Andre from Bornhoffen who accompanied the students with myself on the journey.
Congratulations to Luke Bond, Dylan Clarke, Ava Delaney, Amber Ivers, Noah McIntosh, Pedro Murray, Jacob Neto, Madison Paice, Coco Paola, Franceska Payne and Amarae Smith.

Honor Roll
Introducing Our 2022/2023 Student Leader of Service and Sustainability
Luka Wagner
Hello, I am Luka Wagner, the new Sustainability and Community Service Leader for 2022/23. I have been lucky enough to attend this lovely school since Year 2. I am excited and honoured to represent EAC. I hope I can give back to the College as it has given to me in my time here. I will be pushing many small initiatives to decrease climate anxiety and increase the culture and energy of students towards community service. By the end of my year, I want all students to feel that they have an opportunity to change the world, one small step at a time.
