Matt 7:7
From The Principal
We have had two absolutely wonderful celebrations in honour of the Class of 2020 this week. On Tuesday evening we gathered at St Mary’s Anglican Church to celebrate the academic and extra curricular achievements of the Year 12 cohort as part of the Graduation and Valedictory Service. It is a very special occasion in the life of every student and their family, and I was so pleased that we were able to plan a Covid-safe event and have the parents of the graduating class present. It has been an incredibly challenging year for Year 12 and we can all be so proud of the way they have focused on their studies and successfully completed all of the demands of the HSC year. As always, the students rose to the occasion and were dignified, graceful and humble as they received their awards and graduation portfolios. Amongst the obvious joy, there were a few tears of sadness, from students, teachers and parents as the Emmanuel Anglican College chapter of their lives came to a close.
Last evening the celebrating continued as I had the delightful opportunity to join with the Class of 2020 for the Year 12 Formal. It was a wonderful evening and the students presented themselves with great elegance and style. It is always lovely to see the students present themselves in such a dignified way and a great opportunity to share their excitement about the next instalments in their young lives. The celebration was held at Summerland Farm, with Rev Sally and Mrs Mellissa Evans doing a wonderful job as the MC’s for the evening and Mr Mitchell Raguse speaking of his experience journeying with this group through their senior years. Tim Weingarth and Ella du Plessis fulfilled their final duty as Captains with a heart-felt thank you to the teachers of Year 12 for all that they have done to support the students through their final year of learning. They also paid tribute to each of their peers, thanking them individually for the contribution they have made to the year group. As they depart, I ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they await their HSC results and embark on the next stage of the journey.
We also received some incredible news this week regarding one of our very talented Year 12 students. Each year, students completing Visual Arts, must produce a major work which forms 50% of their HSC Examination mark. The very best pieces are shortlisted for the HSC Visual Arts Showcase, ArtExpress. From this shortlisting process the very best works from across NSW are selected to be exhibited throughout the following year as exemplars for future HSC students to view and draw inspiration from. It gives me great pleasure to announce the Major Work of Year 12 student, Lachlan Mumford has been selected for showcase. Congratulations to Lachlan on this outstanding achievement.

Off the Deputy's Desk
The academic year is drawing to a close, but there is still so much that our students can achieve. Academically, examinations and assessments are either concluded or about to commence. There are still a lot of interschool sporting opportunities occurring and Concert Band is back. Year 12 Graduation and Formal are the highlights of this week and we look forward to sending these students off in a COVID safe, yet hopefully stylish manner. Thanks to the Year 12 students for all their contributions to the fabric of EAC and I wish them all the very best for the future.
Congratulations also to our Year 11 students who had their leadership induction and awards presentation last Thursday morning at St Mary's. These students represented the College magnificently and we wish them every success in the exciting HSC journey that lays ahead of them.
With the long summer holidays approaching, it is a great time to remind parents of some tips for being watchful of their children's online activities. The Office of eSafety has listed 6 great hints for parents. These are as follows:
1. Use parental controls to monitor and limit what your child does online. Parental controls can also set time limits and block access after a set time.
2. Set time limits by ensuring a healthy balance between non school related online activities and offline time. Don’t forget to limit your own time online to model positive behaviour.
3. Stay in open areas of your home - device free zones in your home can help you monitor and manage who your child interacts with online. While you can’t physically monitor your child’s online activities 24/7, establishing rules around technology and devices helps limit the risk of your child being groomed into taking or sharing sexual images or videos with predators.
4. Turn on privacy settings on games and make sure that their profiles are turned on to the strictest privacy setting. Restricting who can contact your child or making it friends only helps to limit unwanted contact. Talk to your child about accepting friend requests from people they may not know but have friends in common with. People are not always who they say they are online.
5. Check that the apps, games and social media sites are age appropriate for your child. Look out for messaging or online chat, as well as location sharing within apps, games or social media accounts - these can expose your child to unwanted contact and reveal their physical location. There may be an option to switch these features off, or limit chats to friends only.
6. Most importantly, remember to take time to co-view and co-play with your children online. Engaging with their online lives is the best way to understand what they are doing online and why they enjoy an app or game. It also provides the perfect opportunity to start conversations about online safety.
I will write to all families in the near future outlining details regarding end of year activities and how they will be rearranged in light of COVID restrictions.

Last week we celebrated NAIDOC Week 2020. Students engaged in authentic learning opportunities designed to enrich their understanding of the Bundjalung history, language and culture. Thank you to our Year One students, Mrs Cahill and Mrs McClelland, Ms Brown and her Secondary Drama students for their beautiful piece and Breanna Baron - it is her voice and her monologue you will hear as the lead in to the prayers.
NAIDOC Week Celebrations - Year 10 Drama Workshop
As part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations, students in the Primary participated in some workshops with Ms Brown and her Year 10 Drama students.
Concert Band Performance Day
Last Friday, our talented Concert Band students presented a series of short concerts for students at EAC. The concerts included students from Year 3 to Year 12 and showcased the repertoire they have been rehearsing over the last term. It was an amazing opportunity for our students. For many, it was the only chance they have had to perform this year. The highlight of the day was the debut performance from the Year 3 Development Concert Band. They performed with confidence and enthusiasm.

Anglicare Christmas Appeal
It is that time of year again when we collect for the Anglicare Christmas Hampers. Year 6 are overseeing the appeal this year, and have made some posters to help us remember.
What can we do?
Each class will be collecting goods to go into the hampers that Anglicare will distribute. What really touches people are the things they would like to buy but don't allow themselves to, or things they know their children will want and go through quickly.
So, treats like Christmas Pudding, mince pies, shortbread, juice, chips etc. It's good to bulk out the hampers with pantry staples as well. It's also good to start from the standpoint of not just what people need in the hamper (which is important), but what we can do to add some sparkle and fun to it.
All items must be brought in before 30th November 2020.
Sports Update
Tobias Marquardt Cup
Last Thursday EAC hosted Lindisfarne for the first round of the inaugural Tobias Marquardt Cup. This will be an annual competition between the two schools. The sports played were Open Boys Cricket, Open Girls Netball, Under 15's Boys Rugby 7's and Under 15's Girls Touch Football. Cricket, touch and netball teams played well but went down to strong Lindisfarne teams. Rugby 7's had one draw and a narrow 2 tries to 1 loss. Our teams will travel to the Tweed later this term for the second round games.
Mr Graham Walker
Sport and Coaching Administrator
Open Boys' Cricket Tobias Marquardt Cup
The cricket team played against Lindisfarne in the Tobias Marquardt Cup. The team exhibited an improved bowling and fielding performance, restricting Lindisfarne to 4/128 from its 20 overs. The best bowler was Toby Mumford who took 3/14 from 4 very hostile overs. Toby was ably supported by Ryan Kernaghan who took 1/23 from 4 overs. Ryan also took a very smart catch at cover and Milos Safranek took 2 catches.
129 was gettable, but unfortunately our batting was not up to the task and were bowled out for 89. Toby Mumford played well making 24 and Aidan Rogers 10. The team plays Xavier again in a fortnight and will be hoping to harness consistency across all facets of the game.

NCIS Primary Basketball
On Tuesday 10 November our Stage 4 boys and girls competed in NCIS Basketball at Coffs Harbour. I would like to congratulate each and every one of the students who participated in this event. Their attitude, sportsmanship, determination and team spirit were exceptional.
A special mention to Mr Christensen, who coached both the teams and led them to a successful day. The teams played five games each, which resulted in both teams coming runners up.

Introducing the Student Leadership Team for 2020/2021
Last Thursday the student leadership team for 2020/2021 were commissioned into their roles. Each student acknowledged their role and the responsibility that comes with taking the position and pledged a commitment to the College during their year of leadership. Each student has written a little about themselves, to introduce them to the College community and outline their vision for EAC.

Lachlan Walker - College Captain
Hi, my name is Lachlan Walker and I am the College Captain for 2020/21. I have attended the College for six years and have benefited from so many amazing opportunities from different representative sporting teams, as well as academic and cultural activities such as Tournament of Minds, interschool debating and the Duke of Edinburgh program. I am also very involved amongst my community and am a leader in my swimming club and represent both my school, club and state on a national level in the sport. As the College Captain for 2020/21, I want to inspire others to be the best they can be. The values that I want to have at the core of my leadership in the coming year are teamwork and enthusiasm. By modelling these behaviours and encouraging them in others, I believe that I can have a positive impact on the College and provide others with opportunities to succeed.
Favourite quote: "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants" Isaac Newton.
Ella Peart - College Captain
Hi! My name is Ella and I will be one of the College Captains for 2021. I have been at Emmanuel since 2010, and have grown up with many of the peers I have today. I am the lead percussionist in the Secondary Concert Band and love representing the school in music, sport and more! I'm passionate about music, playing tennis and spending time with my friends and family. Seeing the College develop from when I started has been incredible to watch, and I look forward to meeting all the new faces of Emmanuel in my year of leadership.
I am so grateful for this opportunity to lead and I'm looking forward to what 2021 has to offer.
Scarlett Donovan - Student Representative Council President
Hey! My name is Scarlett and I'm so excited to be representing the students (and the parents too) as the Student Representative Council President for 2021. I'm super passionate about social justice and making sure everyone feels comfortable at EAC. I love writing and performing music and I want to inspire my peers to be confident in themselves and what they do because it's so important.
Thanks for the privilege to represent you guys!
Simone Redman - Arts and Culture
Hi! My name is Simone and I am your Arts and Culture Leader for 2021. As someone who takes Drama and Visual Arts, I am extremely excited to be your student representative in this area. I am hoping to further the opportunities within the Arts, not only participation wise but celebration wise as well. I think it's very important that we celebrate all achievements and all that has been created whether that be photography, paintings, drawings or major projects.
If you have any ideas you would like to see happen, I'd be glad to hear from you and collaborate together. I'm looking forward to this upcoming year with you all.
Alex Chapman - Community Outreach
My name is Alex. I am the Community Outreach Leader for Emmanuel Anglican College in 2021. I have used much of the time spent within the Emmanuel community participating in extracurricular activities and events. This has included participation in a range of sports as well as after school coaching programs for basketball and the Duke of Edinburgh program. I have also taken part in a wide range of community events. This has ranged from attendance in Naval Cadet ceremonies like ANZAC guards to regular participation in surf lifesaving patrols and community events. During my term as a Community Outreach Leader, I would like to create more opportunities for students to participate in the Lighthouse program. In my opinion, this could both benefit the local community as well as Emmanuel students.
Hayley Oakes - Brockington House Captain
My name is Hayley Oakes, I am the elected 2021 female House Captain for Brockington. Emmanuel Anglican College is a school that proves time and time again we are a school of creative, intelligent people. Given this opportunity, I hope to inspire a greater house and school culture, a culture radiating hope and exuding the College values through the wider community. I wish to build the College's profile and enhance EAC's already prominent reputation.
I am excited for the upcoming year where we will see the integration of the new vertical PC structure, where I hope to inspire, support and encourage students to perform to their potential.
Francois van Kempen - Brockington House Captain
Hi! My name is Francois van Kempen, and I am lucky enough to be one of the Brockington House Captains this year. I've been enrolled in Emmanuel ever since 2014, when I landed in Australia, fresh off the plane from New York City. Since landing in Australia, I have spent much of my time in the community, serving with the Navy Cadets for 4 years, being involvevd with both the State Emergency Service Cadets, and later the SES proper where I teach first aid, knots, and respond to storm jobs, completing Rural Fire Service training, and engaging with debating, tournament of the minds, robotics, the College Concert Band, and the Duke of Edinburgh program.
In my position as the House Captain, I'm hoping to mold Brockington into a tightly knit group, working with my co-Captain, Hayley Oakes.
Maiya Stotter - Purcival House Captain
Hey my name is Maiya and I am one of the Purcival House Captains for 2020/21. I have been at Emmanuel since 2008 and I'm so excited for leading Purcival next year, especially with the new House structure! So a bit more about me, I really enjoy socialising and creating connections with people of all ages. I'm very passionate about equality and ensuring a positive environment is created for all. Out of school, I have run my own business for the past 2 years in which I create films for various brands, weddings, campaigns etc.
As House Captain I am hoping to make a welcoming and fun environment for all students and leave my mark on Emmanuel coming into my final year of schooling.
Gabriel Mison - Purcival House Captain
Hello! My name is Gabe Mison and I am fulfilling the role of Purcival House Captain for the College in 2021. My time at EAC has left me with an appreciation for the strengths of the College, as it has not only facilitated my own personal development throughout my secondary years, but has provided me with opportunities both within and outside the school community. I have been fortunate enough to be involved in school sporting teams, volunteer at a retirement village, and assist my local sporting clubs by refereeing and coaching junior players.
As I enter my final year of schooling, I am excited to be able to give back both to the College and the wider community, and utilise my role to leave a positive mark on the College that will benefit future students.
Paige Wilkie - Smith House Captain
Hi I'm Paige and I'm the female Smith House Captain.
I love playing netball, going to the beach and hanging out with my brother. I think it's really important to become a part of the school community and wider community and always give your best efforts! I am a part of my netball community in Byron Bay, and I always try to help where I can, and I encourage you all to do the same.
I'm really excited to meet you all and have the opportunity to have a really great year. Thank you.
Hamish Walker - Smith House Captain
Hello! My name is Hamish Walker, and I'm the male House Captain for Smith in 2021. Since arriving at EAC in 2015, I've had the opportunity to be involved in a variety of activities, including interschool sport, debating and academic competitions. I've also been able to take part in a wide variety of community service through the Duke of Edinburgh Award, including the EAC guided reading program, local Landcare services, and assisting in the creation of teaching resources for another local school.
As a House Captain in 2021, I'd like to continue building a positive culture of participation, enthusiasm, compassion and respect in Smith House and the wider school community.
Sofia Ribechini - Walker House Captain
Hi! I'm Sofia and I'm the female Walker House Captain for 2021. I've been at EAC since 2013 and have gotten involved in many sporting and creative opportunities, such as art shows, Duke of Edinburgh, basketball and netball gala days and state athletics for javelin. I have been a part of basketball teams outside of school and have been part of a female-based fitness group in the community for many years. I strongly value kindness, enthusiasm, commitment and respect. I hope to get involved in the school and wider community.
I am thrilled to start this new journey with my House next year. Thank you.
Ethan Jorgensen - Walker House Captain
I am Ethan Jorgensen and I have been granted this amazing role of being one of the Walker House Captains for next year. I enjoy playing tennis during the week at the Ballina Tennis courts and am an aspiring miniature hobbyist, though I've still got a long way to go in improving my paintbrush techniques. In the years I've been at EAC, I have been fortunate enough to participate in the many facets of College and community life. From SES with the local Ballina unit, to training with the Rural Fire Service, to early mornings down at Angels Beach with Dune Care, and Saturday afternoons at TS Lismore for weekly Naval Cadet parades. I was lucky enough to be nominated for a position as one of the Year 11 SRC representatives earlier this year and my commitments outside in the community have enabled me to achieve my Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Myself and in particular the rest of our leadership team are very excited to put into action our plans for 2021 and our values of Respect, Enthusiasm and Compassion. The transforming role of House Captain has me thrilled for the opportunity to take part in this new experience and to make my mark on the College's legacy.

Ballina Coastcare says "thank you EAC"
To Emmanuel Anglican College
It's been a challenging year for community groups. Ballina Coastcare would like to thank the dedicated volunteers from EAC who turned out whenever possible to help restore the native bushland around our coast.
I would like to commend all the Duke of Edinburgh students for their commitment and enthusiasm. Over the course of this year, we've made great strides planting trees and eradicating weed species from the Sharpes Beach area. Passers-by and other members of our group have remarked on the positive behaviour and spirited attitude of EAC students.
Anyone wanting to join Ballina Coastcare for next year's Duke of Edinburgh service component is welcome to get in touch via our website www.ballinacoastcare.org.

Primary Update
Peer Support Update
Session 4
Students revised what they have learned about resilience and discussed people who showed them support. Through a story, the children identified where the character has used her personal qualities, strengths and skills to help her overcome challenges. They identified times when she needed support to continue. The children discussed a range of challenges and determined the best person to approach for support. The children consolidated the protective factors for resilience by revising their own strengths and skills and identified five people they could go to for support.
Session 5
Students introduced a three step model to encourage resilient responses; Pause. Plan, Proceed. The children took part in an activity to identify their feelings and the immediate effects on their bodies, like butterflies in their stomachs. The normalcy of feelings was acknowledged and the importance of being proactive was stressed. The children learnt that pausing when they were emotional was helpful. They could do this by being still, taking a deep breath or counting to ten. Pausing gave the children space to see a situation more accurately before planning a response.
