Term 4 | Week 5 | 11 November 2022
"This is what the Lord requires of you: To act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with your God.”
Micah 6:8
From The Principal
On Wednesday evening, I had the delightful opportunity to join with the Class of 2022 and their families for the Year 12 Formal. It was a wonderful evening and the students presented themselves with great elegance and style. It is always lovely to see the students conduct themselves in such a dignified way and the event is a great opportunity to share their excitement about the next instalments in their young lives. The celebration was held at Ballina RSL with students and families gathering near the banks of the Richmond River for some stunning photographs prior to the commencement of the dinner. India Trevan and Judah Wright fulfilled their final duty as Captains with a heart-felt thank you to the parents and teachers of Year 12 for all that they have done to support the students through their final year of learning. They also paid tribute to each of their peers, thanking them for the contribution they have made to the year group. As they depart, I ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers are they await their HSC results and embark on the next stage of their journey.
Congratulations to Ms Jennifer Buddee and all of the Primary students for hosting the Japanese Cultural Day. The day commenced with a professional Taiko (drum) performance/mini workshop followed by a Bon Odori (Obon festival dance) demonstration in The Lindsay Walker Centre. The frenetic drum performance contrasted with the ritualised and meditative dance highlighted the rich and diverse nature of Japanese arts. For many of our students it was their first experience of both arts and they appeared to thoroughly enjoy the experience, although for some of the younger students they did say the drumming was ‘so loud!’. Following the performances, students participated in a Japanese Matsuri (festival) with stalls organised and run by the Year 6 students in the Innovation Centre. There were stalls with games, language, traditional and cultural activities such as origami and some modern ones too, such as Pokémon! Omedeto (Congratulations) and Arigato Gozaimasu (Thank you very much).

OFF THE DEPUTY'S DESK
In an age of electronics where the fear of loosing connectivity through wifi dropout, it is wonderful to have seen the Year 6 students so engaged this week in the Japanese Cultural Festival activities in the Discovery Centre which were organised by Ms Buddee. She worked with the teachers and students to bring to life the engagement and excitement in Japanese culture and the exploration of Japanese games such as kendama.
The kendama (けん玉, "sword [and] ball") is a traditional Japanese skill toy. It consists of a handle (ken), a pair of cups (sarado), and a ball (tama) that are all connected together by a string. On one end of the ken is a cup, while the other end of ken is narrowed down, forming a spike (kensaki) that fits into the hole (ana) of the tama.
The origin of kendama is believed to have originated during the 17th or 18th century. There are now kendama competitions held in countries all over the world, the biggest competition being the annual Kendama World Cup in Japan, but by the look of things we will have to get in a lot more practice before we enter that!
Pokémon (an abbreviation for Pocket Monsters in Japan) came in the form of books and puzzles that had the students enthralled. The ability to engage with the Japanese culture and language through game play removes many of the barriers that we adults face when considering learning a language to help us on our travels. It is the freedom and safety to explore a language that makes this Japanese cultural festival so beneficial for the students.
How confident will these intrepid explorers be when they take off to see the world!

Anglicare 2022 Toys & Tucker Appeal
Each year the EAC Community rallies to support the Anglicare Toys & Tucker appeal. The appeal collects food and gifts and donates them to families who would otherwise go without.
Given the challenges we have all faced in 2022, this year will see more families than ever struggling to make ends meet leading up to the celebration of Christmas.
If you are able, please donate delicious, non-perishable food and a gift or two. Imagine yourself in the position of the receiver and give goods that will be of use and bring joy.
Please send in items with students who will bring them to their classrooms. The closing date for donations is Friday 25 November.

Sports Round Up
Basketball Fever Continues
Term 4 has seen EAC gripped by basketball fever and this week was our Primary students' turn to step up to the line.
Congratulations to our Primary Girls and Boys Basketball Teams who each scored impressive third places at the NCIS Basketball Tournament in Coffs Harbour. All players fought hard for each and every basket with stiff competition in each game they played. In all, the Boys had two wins and two losses, and the Girls had one win and two losses. The students conducted themselves with great sportsmanship and integrity.
Thank you to Mr Steve McCarthy and Mrs Amanda Middleton for joining me in accompanying our students to the competition, as well as Mr Jack Murphy for his assistance with training in the weeks leading up.
Closer to home, students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 have fiercely contested the Primary Inter-House Basketball Competition to conclude their recent basketball unit. It was clear to see the development of all students across the board as each of the games was tightly contested. Thank you to Olivia Mills, Priya Singh-Pangly, Sindi Malaba and Thandi Malaba for officiating the games, and to Mr Tony Lancashire for all of his hard work organising the event.
Congratulations to the following houses for winning their respective competitions:
- Year 3 - Purcival
- Year 4 - Walker
- Year 5 - Smith
- Year 6 - Purcival
- Smith - 40 pts
- Purcival and Walker - 33 pts
- Brockington - 31 pts
Congratulations Smith!

Music Notes
Hi, we are Eva and Harriet and today’s Library Lowdown is:
Firstly, did you know there are new eBooks and audiobooks always being added to the ePlatform library? Ms Jordan absolutely loves Isabelle Carmody books and the third book in her Kingdom of the Lost series - the Ice Maze is one of the new additions this month. Isabelle Carmody spoke at the Byron Writers Festival this year and Mrs Kent has actually provided a video link to her author talk to all your teachers - so you may be watching her talk in class. She is an amazing writer so enjoy!
The big Library news is that the Book Fair starts the week after next. Ms Jordan will be giving you more information about how the Book Fair works in your next Library lessons. For now though we need to let you know that there are some competitions running. The winners of the competitions receive a $15 voucher to spend at the Book Fair. Kindy to Year 3 can enter a colouring competition and Years 4 to 6 can enter a poetry competition. Colouring sheets will be handed out in your next Library lessons and Years 4-6 can either hand their poem in to Ms Jordan at the Library desk or email it to the library@eac.nsw.edu.au. Any type of poem is okay - it could be a Haiku, an Acrostic or Free Verse.
Here’s a limerick poem Ms Jordan wrote to inspire you:
The kids at Emmanuel Primary
Are always so busy and lively
What settles them down
So they don't make a sound
Is a really good book from the Library
Take care everyone and HAPPY READING!
Stop, Collaborate and Listen
This week Year 6 and Mrs Tonnet's Year 7 and 8 Geography/History classes listened to Nicole Eldrige, Programs and Engagement Officer for Richmond Tweed Regional Library (RTRL) speak about services dedicated to students. Students were very attentive and Nicole was a great speaker.
- students can access a huge variety of reference material and database through the RTRL website
- students can photocopy for assignments and homework at the local library branches free of charge
- the wifi at RTRL is free
- older children are welcome to be in the library on their own
- Ms Jordan can arrange RTRL Memberships for EAC students if parents don't have time to visit a library branch
Thank you to the Secondary HSIE and English teachers who also met with Nicole over a delicious morning tea provided by Mr McRae. They discussed ways EAC can partner with Nicole and the local library, so expect to see her regularly at EAC in the future.
Canteen Cookup
Canteen Moving to End of Year Mode
With the College year coming to an end, the Canteen will be cutting back on ordering so that excess stock is not being held over the Christmas break.
This will begin in week six (week commencing Monday 14 November). As stock sells out, items will be removed from School Stream. Never fear though, fan favourites 'chicken goujons' and 'mini beef pies' will continue to be available to the very end!
Last of Canteen for 2022 is Friday 2 December.
Thank you for your continuing support of the Canteen in 2022.
Ms Christine Hall
Canteen Coordinator
How To EAC
How to... Sell Your Senior Blazer
EAC Blazers denote seniority and are worn exclusively by our Year 11 and 12 students. For many, their blazers remain in great condition and are suitable to be on-sold for the next generation of EACers to wear with pride.
The best way to sell your blazer is through the Friends of EAC 2nd Hand Uniform Shop.
Simply write a note detailing your student's name, best contact and how much you would like to sell your blazer for. Pop the note in the top blazer pocket and bring it to Reception in the Administration Building. The Friends of EAC 2nd Hand Uniform Shop will then offer the blazer for sale at your nominated price and when sold will contact you to forward funds less 15% which is donated to the Friends of EAC.
Early Learning Centre Corner
Move Over Monet
Our budding Picassos and Monets are busily preparing their masterpieces for the upcoming 2022 EAC Early Learning Centre Art Show and they could not be more excited!
The Art Show will be held 4-5.30pm Tuesday 22 November in the Early Learning Centre and all our ELC families are invited to attend.
We are hoping no Banksy 'auction antics' will disrupt what will no doubt be an impressive display of raw talent!

Primary Bee-Hiving Beautifully
This week two beekeepers, Wendy and Steve, came to EAC to place 5,000-10,000 bees in our College garden! They talked to each class individually about the bees, with facts about their stingers, honey and much, much more! Fortunately, the bees have no stingers so we do not have to worry.
Did you know that these bees will only come out if it’s over 18 degrees and also won’t come out if it’s higher than 35 degrees? Anything higher than 42 degrees could possibly kill them so we had to make sure they live in a place with shade, sun and plenty of pollen and nectar.
Our class, 5C, was lucky enough to be the last class to have a talk with the beekeepers so we also got to see the beehive get installed and we even got to try some of their honey! The honey was unbelievably tasty, so good in fact you’d have to try it to understand just how delicious I mean. All in all, this was a really cool opportunity for EAC and I can’t wait to try the bee’s honey again in the near future.
By Emily Evans, 5C
Well that was 'Tanoshii'!
The Japanese Culture Day held on Wednesday 9 November was a tanoshii (fun) experience for all who attended. Students in Years 1 to 6 not only watched but also participated in the very energetic Taiko Drumming performance in The Lindsay Walker Centre. Afterwards, the energy levels were further boosted by attending the matsuri (festival) in the Innovation Centre where students engaged with Japanese games and activities.
Thank you to all staff and students who helped make the Culture Day such a success!

International Program Coordinator and Teacher of Primary Japanese
LEGO Legends
On Saturday 5 November, four teams of EAC students competed in the First Lego League Regional Competition at Merrimac State High School, Mermaid Waters, Queensland. They had been preparing their Robot Game, Robot Design, Core Values and Innovation Project for ten weeks about the challenge SuperPowered. All teams put in their best efforts throughout the experience and the day.
Two of the teams received awards.
The Rising All-Stars Award - EAC Year 5 Team 1
The Robo Design Award - EAC Year 6 Team 1
The EAC Year 6 Team 1 also succeeded in advancing to the National competition on 3 December to be held in Rothwell, Queensland. Congratulations to the students involved.
These kinds of events cannot happen without the hard work and determination of the teachers. A big thank you to Ms Jody Baker and Mr John Conomos for being team Coaches and Mentors throughout the FLL journey.
Good Luck to EAC Year 6 Team 1. We wish you all the very best for the National Championships!
I hope everyone involved will be back and ready to compete again next year.

Lest We Forget
Our Secondary Captains Lara Atkinson and Nkosi Malaba represented the College at the Remembrance Day Commemoration Service and wreath laying ceremony. As the Rev. Ronald J Law stated, “In so much of our world war is a grim reality, and we cry out to you in the darkness of our divided world that you will bring the light of your hope”. Being the first post-COVID Remembrance Day ceremony it brought many veterans and service personal together again to reflect on the conflicts of the past and the sacrifices which were made to preserve our liberty.

Introducing Our 2022/2023 Student Leader of Sport and Spirit
Jackson Bond
What’s up guys! My name is Jackson Bond and I am your first Sport and Spirit Leader of EAC. If you are taking time to read this I assume you are interested in the physical activity within the College. My task is to develop and promote a wider range of sporting opportunities to increase College participation and spirit.
I am extremely approachable and I require all your ideas and requests to maximise sport and ensure that our College’s success is recognised inside and outside our community. Being at the College for 13 years, I have acknowledged many strengths and weaknesses in the sporting aspect of the College.
Increasing sport and participation throughout EAC will grow our culture and form valuable relationships through the enjoyment of exercise and games. I truly imagine myself to leave a positive sporting footprint on the College community through a leadership position, and hope that EAC will become a sporting empire!
