Term 4 | Week 3 | 28 October 2022
'For those who have been given much, much will be expected'
Luke 12:48
From The Principal
Well, it’s opening night! After four months of rehearsal and preparation, our cast and crew of Matilda are ready to take to the stage and perform. I have had the privilege of attending rehearsals at regular intervals and seeing the show come together and students grow in confidence. I can assure you, that all those who attend will be absolutely wowed by the experience. We wish them luck for their week of performances.
There are so many people to thank and after the show has wrapped up, I will make sure I have acknowledged them all. I do, however, wish to acknowledge, thank and congratulate our Director, Jacquie McCalman for her inspiration, determination and sheer hard work. Her experience, skill and insight has lifted the quality of the production and the student performers to a remarkable level and we have just been so blessed to have her lead this production. I particularly want to make the point that the hundreds of hours she has put into this production have all been volunteered. What a gift to our community. Thank you, Jacquie!
I am also amazed (and grateful) for the incredible support of the EAC community for the show. So far we have sold more than 2,000 tickets with four shows sold out and a sixth show released due to popular demand. I am sure it will be a fabulous experience for all involved.
Year 11 Reports were distributed last week and I congratulate the students on some outstanding individual and group results. Despite the challenges this year has presented in terms of flood, COVID and flu, many students in Year 11 have shown incredible application to their students and as a result experienced great success. Parent and Teacher interviews will be held by phone on the afternoon of Wednesday 2 November.
I also ask all our families to continue to keep Year 12 in their thoughts and prayers next week as they undertake the final week of their HSC examinations. We pray that they can remain calm and focused and that all their study will ensure that they have prepared well and will be able to demonstrate their best.

OFF THE DEPUTY'S DESK
What a terrific start to this week at the College with the Stay and Play afternoon at the Early Learning Centre.
Our new students who will commence in 2023 came to have a play date which allowed for the kids and families to meet for a chat with our ELC Director, Nicole Wilson, and her wonderful team. We had great weather allowing the families to mingle and spend time getting together in the sand pit or on the play equipment. Adults and kids enjoyed the opportunity to relax at the end of the day and indulge in colouring in and clay modelling.
It is the beginning of many memories for the boys and girls as they start of on their journey at the College to being our graduating classes of 2036 and beyond! Wow! What challenges will they face? How will their world work? This is the beginning of our philosophy to teach students how to think, not what to think. They will learn how to engage with the world into which they will emerge as innovators, leaders and contributors.

Anglicare 2022 Toys & Tucker Appeal
Each year the EAC Community rally to support the Anglicare Toys & Tucker appeal. The appeal collects food and gifts and donates them to families who would otherwise go without.
Given the challenges we've all faced in 2022, this year will see more families than ever struggling to make ends meet leading up to the celebration of Christmas.
If you're able, please donate delicious, non-perishable food and a gift or two so. Imagine yourself in the position of the receiver and give goods that will be of use and bring joy.
Please send in items with students who will bring to their classrooms. Closing date for donations is Friday 25 November.

Sports Round Up
Spike for EAC Volleyball Teams
Our students had a successful trip to the NCIS Secondary Volleyball Championships in Coffs Harbour on Wednesday, with our U15 Boys coming away champions and our U15 Girls finishing runners up. Both our Open Boys and Open Girls teams won a number of games but were unable to go on with the task, losing a couple of close sets to leave them out of the final placings.
Following a long time since volleyball was contested at NCIS level, it was fantastic to see it back again. Thank you to Mrs Emma Tiatia, Mrs Heidi Miller and Mr Jarryd Hawkes for all of their hard work training our teams in the lead up to the competition and coaching them on the day of the event. We look forward to seeing the passion for volleyball continue to develop at EAC.
Congratulations to all our volleyball players!

Library Lowdown
Ethan, Year 12 & Oliver, Year 8
Lochlain, Vivienne and Freya from Year 4
A word from our roving Student Reporters...
Hi, we are Jakob and Ryder and here's this week's Library Lowdown!
A big thank you to the students who are remembering to be quiet in and around the Library and canteen - especially at this time of the year when the Year 12 students are doing the most difficult exams kids ever have to do. Ms Jordan has been very disappointed to hear the echoing sound of kids bouncing balls along the pathway. When you are walking to and from the courts, make sure you hold your sports equipment.
The books Ms Jordan purchased with the money raised for the Book Week Book Swap have begun to arrive. The books on the screen in the Library are some of the titles she chose for us. Can you see any you’d like to borrow? Keep your eye on the display near the Library desk as they will be placed there when they are ready for borrowing.
It is fantastic that lots of you have been using the Britannica Schools database for your research projects. Year 3 are using it, along with Library books and Epic!, to locate information for their group work activities for the Celebrations topic they are studying this term. It is very important that you use trusted sources like Britannica Schools rather than just any old website on the internet.
And lastly a reminder that the Scholastic Book Fair, run by the Year 5 Library Monitors, will be happening in the Library meeting room in Weeks 7 and 8 this term so start saving your pocket money! Ms Jordan has ordered extra posters as these were very popular last year.
Take care everyone and HAPPY READING!
Year 12 Textbooks On Offer In Print and Online
As one Year 12 class concludes, another commences and this changeover period can lead to a surge in demand for textbooks.
The Joan Pickup Library are working hard to offer digital versions of essential textbooks for incoming Year 12s as well as liaising closely with our outgoing Year 12s to return hard copy textbooks they no longer require.
Thanks to those outgoing Year 12s who have already returned their books. We hope they have served you well!
It's great to see our incoming Year 12 students are super keen to get going and already utilising the Library's dedicated study space.
Canteen Cookup
8.30am is the Magic Number
As demand for our Canteen continues to grow we thought it timely to remind our community of the cut off time for orders each day.
Please ensure your orders are processed on SchoolStream prior to 8.30am on the day the food is required.
You can place orders up to a week in advance so there's plenty of time to plan ahead if you're able to.
Thanks for your support and understanding.

New Friends bring a Spring to our Step
As our Kindy class of 2023 prepare to venture forth to the other side of the fence, we're starting the welcome process for our new friends starting at the Early Learning Centre in the New Year. This is such an exciting time of year for everyone at the ELC, students, educators and parents alike. With all the comings and goings, we're making the most of every day together and enjoying as much playtime as we possibly can.
It's not only our students who are flourishing at the moment. Our veggie patch and gardens are all going crazy with new growth. The much loved hedge is forever offering new climbing routes and lookout points for our more adventurous explorers while our native garden walk is abundant with flowers and foliage that make just the right ingredients for 'Everything Soup' and mud pies.
Here at the ELC, we LOVE spring!

Primary Pulse
Thank You Students
The stage is set, the lines are learnt, the tickets are sold and, at long last, it's SHOWTIME! Matilda starts tonight, Friday 28 October and our Primary students are bursting with excitement and pride. Regardless of whether they are in the cast, crewing behind the scenes or ready to clap up a storm as very enthusiastic audience members, the children have really taken ownership of all things Matilda and their support for one another has been a pleasure to behold.
Thank you students for your unbridled joy - it's been a source of great inspiration for all the grown ups around you. Thanks as well for your incredible pester power which has seen shows sell out across our Matilda season! And thank you, so much, for supporting your fellow students who have worked so hard to produce a show we are all so proud of.

EQ IQ
Last week I was listening to a podcast by The Imperfects on Creating Emotionally Intelligent Humans. This podcast got me thinking about the importance of Emotional Intelligence within school and work and how it supports us in meeting our personal goals.
Emotional Intelligence is the ability to understand, use, and manage emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathise with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict. It helps in building stronger relationships and helps connection to feelings and inform decisions.
We all can remember a time in our lives where we have been angry, frustrated and full of rage. This might have been at a young age when someone smashed a large tower that we built or it could be with a situation at school or work which we felt was unjust. Being able to manage these feelings is such an important skill to learn at school. As a College, our Wellbeing programs are developed to support students in recognising their feelings and developing strategies to support them. Emotional intelligence affects us in many ways including:
- Your performance at school: High emotional intelligence helps to navigate the social complexities of the school or workplace and leads to motivation for others.
- Your physical health: if a student is unable to manage their emotions, they will struggle in stressful situations which can lead to health programs
- Your mental health: uncontrolled emotions and stress impact on mental health
- Your relationships: expressing feelings and being able to communicate these effectively can forge stronger relationships
- Your social intelligence: being in tune with emotions helps develop connections with others
So how do we support our children building the vital skills to help them succeed and be more emotionally aware?
There are four skills to building Emotional Intelligence:
- Self Management
When we face stress or challenging situations, this takes us out of our comfort zone and we become overwhelmed. Developing the skills to manage stress and stay emotionally present helps us to manage situations in health ways.
- Self Awareness
Developing the ability to manage core feelings such as anger, sadness, fear and joy helps us to understand our emotional influences and actions.
- Social Awareness
Recognising and interpreting the non verbal cues of others helps us to communicate better.
- Relationship Management
Working with others is a process that supports emotional awareness and the ability to recognise and understand what other people are experiencing.
Mindfulness is one of the main strategies that we use at EAC to support students in managing their emotions. By spending time in quiet reflection, it allows students to be in the present and stop worry about the past issue or future concerns.
I am still on my own journey with my children and myself to improve Emotional Intelligence but see it as an important skills for success in the modern world.

Director of the Secondary School
Together We're Better
Every second Wednesday of this term, Year 10 and Year 11 will be participating in a wonderful program with the students from Biala Special School. Together students from both schools will play ball games and spend time together to broaden their understanding of one another's worlds. Our first session was held last week and was an instant hit with new friendships forged and lots of fun had. We look forward to sharing more of this program with you in the coming weeks.

Students Flip Over Excursion
Last week our Year 11 Sport, Lifestyle & Recreation Studies were treated with an excursion to Bounce at Burleigh Waters and they had a BLAST! Back flips, front flips, ninja and parkour... the possibilities for fun with fitness were limitless. Students were learning how exercise can be made fun and approachable and how facilities such as Bounce can inspire movement and healthy activity. The group also visited Robina Town Centre on the day and came back full of enthusiasm for how movement programs can be developed using the great facilities in our community has on its doorstep.

There's Nothing Artificial About Year 10's Intelligence!
Students in Year 10 Information and Software Technology (IST) have entered the amazing physical and digital world of programmable, remote-control robots and intelligent creations. The students have built different motorised robots and vehicles which they then bought to 'life' by writing code to solve challenging missions.
Robots for students are the perfect way to help youngsters express and develop their creativity while gaining essential 21st century STEM skills.

Honor Roll
Introducing Our 2022/2023 Student Representative Council President
Eliza Grosser
Hey! My name is Eliza Grosser and I’m the Student Council Representative President for 2023. I’ve been at EAC since kindergarten and throughout that time I’ve strived to get involved in whatever I can, be that band, drama, debating, sport and more. It’s through these activities that I’ve discovered the amazing talents of our school community and I’m honoured to be able to help harness these strengths in the SRC. In the upcoming year I hope to create many opportunities for my peers and work together with staff and students to make EAC a community that embraces and celebrates all students.
