"With God all things are possible."
Matthew 19:26
From The Principal
The Discovery Centre Extension construction project continues to move ahead at a rapid rate and the building is really starting to take shape. With all of the roofing complete, the focus of work has moved to the fit out of the internal spaces. The project includes two classrooms, a shared learning space and a large covered verandah area for use during both learning and break times.
The building will become home for Year 2 in 2022. I want to acknowledge the Commonwealth Government and their support of the building project through a grant obtained through the Block Grant Authority application process.
Students in the Primary school will participate in 'Step Up' day next Wednesday 1 December and spend the afternoon with their 2022 class group and teacher. Quite a buzz is growing among primary students as they speculate about who might be their teacher, what room they will be in and who will be their classmates. Over the last few weeks, teachers have used data about students' learning styles, friendship groups, educational needs, learning outcomes and group dynamics, to help them formulate the class groups for 2022. It has been a very thorough and well considered process and I thank the teachers for the care they have taken in building class groups that will best support the social and educational needs of all students.
On the same day, Year 7 2022 will gather to undertake a Secondary School Experience Day. We have 24 students from outside the College joining our current Year 6 cohort of 72 students for a day of 'taster lessons', learning about daily life in the high school as well as taking the opportunity to make new friends. It will be a very busy, exciting and important day for all our primary students.

Off the Deputy's Desk
Jimmy Barnes provided me with one of the most memorable moments of my past week at EAC. From the award winning author and rock legend Jimmy Barnes and critically acclaimed illustrator Matt Shanks came a book about the joy of being yourself, Rosie the Rhinoceros, which I had the pleasure of reading to Kindergarten students. I expected them to be a tough audience!
Who was Rosie? Was she a fun loving rhinoceros who was always up early and ready to greet the day? Or was she a magical unicorn who skipped through the savannah on her dainty hooves? Either way she was perfect.
Jimmy showed through the struggles of his own life, which took him from the slums of Glasgow; to working in a foundry in South Australia; to carving out a career in music, that like him our students are not defined by their circumstance but by the choices they make.
In the world our students will grow into, it is the skills of resilience, adaptability and creativity that will best support their journey. At EAC we continually strive to develop inquisitive creative minds who, like Rosie the Rhinoceros, seek to pursue a life well lived, full of optimism, hope and a myriad of choices.
As Oscar Wilde said, "Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken".
Already I am looking forward to our next story time.

Week 1 of Primary Swimming Intensive
Last week our Kindy to Year 2 students participated in their annual Primary Intensive Swimming Program at the Alstonville Aquatic Centre. This program offers the chance for our students to become more comfortable in water and learn to swim. For those already proficient at swimming, the program focused on swimming technique and survival strokes.
The program is delivered with expert swimming coaches in a fun and supportive environment. A big thank you to the Alstonville Aquatic Centre swim coaches and to the EAC Primary teaching staff for their assistance with student management, ensuring the program ran smoothly and maximised time in the water for our students. Enjoy some photos of Primary swimming in Week 1.
Secondary News
Zoom Exchange with Meitoku
Year 9 and 10 Japanese students on Tuesday made a connection with our sister school in Japan, Meitoku Gijuku. Missing the exchanges we usually get in person the last few years, this was another opportunity for students from both schools to get to know each other, share stories and teach each other about their culture.
Thank you Buddy Sensei, Paton Sensei and Campbell Sensei for helping with our online exchange.
Lions Youth of the Year
Each year the school enters students in the Lions Youth of the Year competition. This competition encourages and develops leadership qualities of our youth as they are about to enter employment or higher education. The competition includes an interview about the initiatives taken at school and activities and involvement outside of school, a public speaking component of a prepared speech and some impromptu questions.
We are currently seeking students aged over 15 who are interested in being part of this competition. If you are interested please see Mrs Middleton.

Duke of Edinburgh
2021 was another challenging year for community groups, with many restrictions throughout the year.
So Ballina Coastcare would like to give a huge thank you to the dedicated Duke of Edinburgh students from EAC who regularly gave up their Sunday mornings to help restore our coastal vegetation. There were lots of weeds to remove, such as bitou bush, lantana and ground asparagus, and sometimes it seemed like the battle was never ending.
But a big group effort helped us clear a new area at Sharpes Beach where we planted 180 trees in August. these trees are doing so well after the recent rain that some have reached head height already!
Ballina Coastcare will be back again next year, and we also hold events over the school holidays. anyone who wants to get a head start on their community service hours, or just wants to learn more about our coast, is always welcome to join us.

Primary Update
Primary Assembly
Last week, our Year 1A students provided a wonderful assembly for the Primary School. They showcased their musical instrument creations, made whipped cream, programmed robots and performed an indigenous Dreamtime Story. It is a great showcase of the learning that goes on each and every day here at EAC. We do hope that you enjoy these digital versions of our assembly, especially at a time when parental involvement is restricted. And the best thing is you can skip ahead to the sections that you are interested in!
Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair Tuesday 22 November to Thursday 2 December
The new space in the Joan Pickup Library has been transformed into a children's bookstore where students can browse and purchase books directly with their pocket money or select books to record on their Wish Lists to take home to discuss with parents. Usually, parents would also be invited to attend the book fair to assist with these transactions, but under the current restrictions this is not possible - hopefully next year.
Mr Cross has filmed a sneak preview of the Book Fair that also explains the ways to purchase.
As explained in the video, the best way for students to purchase is with cash, but parents can also deposit money into a digital wallet on the scholastic Book Fair portal. Here are the instructions:
- Click on the online payment portal.
- Enter State and School - Emmanuel Anglican College (make sure the tabs above the search bar are on "school" and not "suburb".
- Enter credit card details and the amount (if your child needs change this will be given in cash).
- If you prefer your child purchases a particular title, highlight this on the Wish list.
- Record the receipt number on the Wish List or print the receipt.
- Bring the Wish List back to the school to purchase the books.
Students will all visit the Book Fair in the Library time this week to complete their Wish List. They can also visit the Book Fair before school, or for Years 2 and up, at First Break. The Fair will run for two weeks, so there is plenty of time to purchase.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact Ms Jordan in the library.
