Term 4 | Week 1 | 11- October 2022
‘Happy the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God’
Matthew 5:8
From The Principal
On Thursday evening, 13 October 2022, the College had the privileged opportunity to welcome the Most Reverend and Right Honourable Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury and his wife, Mrs Caroline Welby. The Archbishop is the spiritual leader of the worldwide Anglican Community and is in Australia for 10 days to learn more about the work of the Anglican Church of Australia.
Archbishop Justin is visiting our region in response to the devastating floods that ravaged the area in February and March of this year. As part of his visit, he also wanted to connect with those working in the mission and ministry in the Anglican Church of the Grafton Diocese. Remarkably, a visit to Emmanuel Anglican College was included on his itinerary.
Over 700 people attend his public lecture which was held at the College in the Lindsay Walker Centre. His great personal warmth, humility and wisdom rang through as is spoke about building peace in a diverse world. He reflected on the importance of keeping the lines of communication open, even during conflict, as a conversation can create empathy and compassion which are the foundations to reconciliation and peace. He also provided some sobering thoughts about the impact of climate change and the threat it brings to world peace as the number of climate refugees grow. Following his address was a ‘Q&A’ session led by the Bishop of Grafton the Right Reverend Dr Murray Harvey. During this session, Archbishop Justin’s lovely down to earth manner really shown through as he joked with the audience and share a number of funny anecdotes including a couple about his experiences with the Royal Family.
The Archbishop also took time to meet a number of students and spend a moment with them in conversation about College life. As part of the evening, the Emmanuel College Band performed, and they were simply brilliant. Numerous people, including the Archbishop were taken aback by the standard of performance and commented on how much they enjoyed the music.
It was an honour and privilege to have Archbishop Justin Welby visit our College and he even left a couple gifts including a signed copy of his latest book “The Power of Reconciliation” and a signed photo of him in Canterbury Cathedral.

OFF THE DEPUTY'S DESK
Who watched the State of Origin series this year?! Go the Maroons!
As a Maroons supporter, I never want to miss an opportunity to remind everyone who won the State of Origin series this year. It has been a series of dismal seasons so there was definitely cause for this former Queenslander to celebrate.
When I was a student Wayne Bennett was the Queensland coach. I knew him by his reputation as one of Rugby League’s greatest coaches winning 7 grand finals. With an enviable record of achievement he got his success as a coach by keeping his philosophy simple.
He had a special Three Step Rule he used when training his players for a Grand Final.
“Don’t stop three steps short.”
His players undertook seven-minute runs, finishing at a concrete slab. If they stopped running just short of the slab, Bennett took issue.
“It’s a state of mind,” he said.
“Three steps won’t make any difference fitness-wise, but three steps make all the difference to the psyche. You know you haven’t taken a shortcut, you know when you’re tired, you’ve found something.
“And that’s what they’re going to be on Grand Final Day. When they get to that point, they know they can go those three extra steps because they have to.
“The kind of people who stop three steps short, they’re in all forms of life. Great ability, talent... they just won’t make those last three steps.”
Simple ideas but ideas which this week I have challenged all our students to benefit from this term.
Following the visit on Thursday night by the Archbishop of Canterbury the EAC student leaders spent the morning with the student leaders from St Columba Anglican College, Port Macquarie. It was a wonderful opportunity for both groups to come together to share their visions and experiences of leaderships as they prepare to lead their respective school communities.
We are truly blessed to have such a fine group of students to lead the College in 2023.

Richmond Tweed Regional Library to Partner with EAC
Great news! EAC has established a partnership with Richmond Tweed Regional Libraries to share resources and collaborate on special projects. We're thrilled to be able to leverage the might of the RTRL, New South Wales' largest regional Library service.
Students in Years 6 to 12 are encouraged to collect and complete RTRL membership forms from our Library. The College will then liaise with the RTRL to sort access to their awesome eResources for each student.
On Tuesday 25 October, Nicole Eldridge, RTRL's Program and Engagement Officer will be visiting the College to distribute membership cards and conduct dedicated information sessions with Year 6, select classes in Years 7 and 8.
Thanks to all the students and parents who have already completed their forms and taking great advantage of this excellent resource.

ELC Students Rock Our World
Our Maintenance staff received an extra special offer of help this week from our EAC students. During their play, our ELC have unearthed a load of rocks from the playground and were keen to see them put to good use. After an exhaustive reconnaissance and an impressive haul achieved, students worked together to put their offer in writing and a delegation was nominated to present the offer in person.
Our Maintenance Staff were delighted with the students' enthusiasm and thoughtfulness and are now brainstorming ways to showcase the rocks.
It's moments like these that reaffirm the strong bonds between our ELC, the College and our Staff and show the wonderful initiative and caring of even our youngest students.
Vacation Care THE Place to Be!
Our Vacation Care was booked solid over the Spring School Holidays. With a jam-packed program of activities including perennial favourite 'Wheels Day', Vacation Care goers had a blast. 'Gardening Day' was a favourite program addition and included planting out herbs and veggies as well as creating organic bird feeders especially for our local native bird life.
Remember to book in early for the Summer Holidays!
Primary Pulse
Hi Harold!
Welcome back one and all to another exciting Term at EAC. I trust that you all had a relaxing break and it is great to see the kids refreshed and ready for the term ahead.
For the 13 Primary student in Matilda, the holiday period was spent preparing for the upcoming season. The first week was spent here at school at the Matilda Boot Camp and the second week perfecting their dancing, singing and dialogue. It’s not a marketing trick that the line 'Tickets Are Selling Fast' is being bandied out, with over 1,100 tickets sold already. With less than 300 tickets remaining, please ensure you have booked your family tickets to what will be a wonderful show.
This week our Year 5 and 6 students got straight back to task with the commencement of the Interrelate program. Their unit of study concentrates on moving into the teen years and covers areas such as:
- Acknowledging personal differences and promoting respect for, and acceptance of, others
- Increasing awareness of personal safety and protective behaviours
- Develop students’ understanding of physical development at puberty, and provide strategies for managing these changes
- Discussing different types of relationships and strategies for managing conflict
Starting next week on Tuesday 18 October and running through to Tuesday 25 October, all classes from Kindergarten to Year 6 will have the opportunity to visit the Life Education Van here at school. If, like me, you were educated in Australia in the 1980’s the phrase “Everything I know about life, I learnt as a child from a giraffe in a caravan” may raise a chuckle. Well, Happy Harold and the Life Education Van have been supporting the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of children and young Australians for over 40 years. They do this by delivering best practice and curriculum aligned programs to thousands of preschools and primary schools reaching over 700,000 children aged 3-13 every year. They partner with schools, and parents, to deliver interactive and fun educational lessons that empower children and young people to make safer, healthier and happier choices.
Our students will be involved the programs below
Kindergarten
Year 1
Year 2
Year 3
Year 4
Years 5 and 6
I know the students will gain valuable lessons from these educational opportunities afforded to them here in the Primary School at EAC and well help to grow them into well-rounded and well-educated individuals.

Wellbeing Does Wonders
During Term 4 there will be a number of different opportunities for students during Wellbeing Lessons. As a College we have a real focus on Service Learning in line with our College Lighthouse program as well as the importance of creating and celebrating House Spirit with preparation for a House Spectacular on the last day of school.
The Wellbeing activities are as follows:
Year 7
Students will work through the 'Bullying. No Way!' program to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of being an upstander, not a bystander.
Year 8
Students will have the opportunity to prepare for the House Spectacular as well as getting the opportunity to support both the local community and an overseas charity. Throughout the term each Wellbeing class will have one lesson where they prepare food for a local soup kitchen as well as knitting for an overseas charity. They also will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of Service Learning and their rights and responsibilities as citizens.
Year 9
Students will continue to learn and develop the skills required to support them as they navigate schooling. This includes an understanding of emotional literacy and thinking from different perspectives, learning problem solving skills and where to get help. They will also work on the House Spectacular.
Year 10
This term is a preparation term for the Peer Support program. These students will learn the important skills that are required to be a student mentor and also gain a deeper understanding of the role they will play in supporting the 2023 Year 7 cohort at the College.
Year 11/12
As the new leaders of the College, these students will take a leading role in the House Spectacular presentation. They will also gain a deeper understanding of the importance of volunteering and how to be a good volunteer. Opportunities will be provided for the students to help within the Primary school and also support the social and physical interactions of students from Biala. They will also participate in the 'b Street Smart' program about safe driving practices.
As a College we continue to work through the House System to support all students to develop a sense of belonging at the College.
Amanda Middleton
Director of the Secondary School
Courage to Care is an initiative offered to students in Years 10, 11 and 12 during their Wellbeing lessons. The program encourages students to be 'upstanders' in their lives by advocating for themselves, their peers and others within the community.
Students prepare a presentation inspired by ideas such as testimony from a Holocaust survivor that highlights the need in our society for teach them about empathy and how to overcome adversity.
Students are encouraged to use these sessions as inspiration for their own lives and in particular, what they can do in their world of school and community to stand up against prejudice, injustice and discrimination. It supports many of the topics that students focus on in their Wellbeing lesson as well as our ethos as a College.
