‘’Happy the peacemakers; they shall be called the sons and daughters of God’ Matthew 5:9
From The Principal
Overnight I have received some incredible news regarding our HSC Drama students. Following the HSC practical performance examinations, the markers identify the highest quality performances from around the state and nominate them for OnStage, the HSC Drama showcase, which happens in February the following year at the Seymour Theatre. Less than 200 items from the 6000 plus performances across the state make it to this nomination stage.
I am delighted to say that ALL of the Year 12 Drama students have received at least one nominations. Both the group pieces and 4 of the individual performances have been nominated. This is an outstanding achievement and highlights the incredible talent of our students and the wonderful group of teachers who work with them. The selection phase takes place in the next few weeks. The students are:
Niva Elwald
Sinead Fell
Asha Green
Arran Hughes
Maddyson Lloyd
Juliette McDonald
Teia Nair
Kate Utting
A huge thank you and congratulations to Ms Eva Brown for her amazing work with, and support of, the students. Eva is such a gifted educator, who has the capacity to identify the unique strengths of each performer and guide them in the development of their performance pieces to maximise the benefit of their unique skills.
We also were blessed with the visit of Arch Bishop Geoff Smith and his wife Lynn Smith on Monday of this week. Geoff and Lynn were the key driving force behind the foundation of Emmanuel Anglican College. Rev Geoff Smith was formally the Rector of Ballina and on the 13 December, 1995, he and Lynn held a meeting at their home to begin the process of establishing a school. The minutes show that it was proposed to “Establish a two stream school of approximately 700 pupils, Kindergarten to Year 12.” When Geoff and Lynn returned this week it was the first time they have visited the College since the Year 2000. They were absolutely amazed at the College that has come to fruition as a result of their vision.
At a special Whole College Assembly on Monday, we acknowledged and thanked Bishop Geoff and Lynn for their vision, courage, commitment, hard work and great faith and we celebrated the wonderful legacy that they have left for all of us to share and enjoy. In addressing the College, Bishop Geoff spoke about the fear and trepidation he felt on the night that he signed the loans to fund the start up of the College. He spoke of his joy in being with us in our 20th Year and seeing such a vibrant and dynamic College. Most importantly he spoke about God's great work here at EAC. Highlighting the words of the College motto, ‘God is with us’ and stating that clearly God has been with us as so many wonderful things have been achieved throughout the College’s first 20 years. Bishop Geoff and Lynn toured the College, visited classes, met with the Secondary Student Representative Council and were the special guest of a Year 6 Q&A workshop. They thoroughly enjoyed their visit and said their experience of the College was warm, friendly and welcoming, and the lovely enthusiasm of the students was really the highlight. It was another fantastic day of celebration for our 20th anniversary.
Congratulations to our Tournament of the Minds competitors who travelled to Sydney on the weekend to compete in the NSW finals. The standard was incredibly high and our students held their own receiving great praise from the judges. While the students did not win, they did represent themselves and the College with great dignity and pride. Congratulations to all involved and a special thank you to Mr Darren Parks and Mrs Daniela Payne for supporting the students throughout the last two months as they have prepared for the competition.

The kids are alright! This is an expression that is often used by a variety of commentators and in popular culture. Young people are often criticized by those yearning for the past but this phrase was definitely correct given my observations at Tournament of Minds NSW State Championships in Sydney last weekend. There were students from all over NSW representing their regions in a hard fought battle of wills, tenacity, intelligence, creativity and teamwork. Our 2 secondary teams competed really well and represented the College in a positive light thanks to their teamwork and efforts. However, I saw amazing young people – primary and secondary working together, communicating respectfully, being creative and collaborative, solving problems and innovating. All of this occurred in great spirit and a sense of genuine enjoyment. There were lots of smiles on faces despite the fact that it was a very long way-7.30 am until 7.00 pm. Whilst we returned to Ballina without a trophy our students should be proud of their efforts.
On Monday we were privileged to be visited by Archbishop Geoff Smith who was the person responsible for the initial vision for EAC. Archbishop Smith addressed the students at a special assembly, blessed the school and had time to spend time with a representation of students from across the College. Again our students did a great job in presenting themselves and the College in a positive light.
Last week we hosted a very successful HSC Drama performance evening in the Ezzy Centre and the standard was of an extradinarily high standard. The Year 12’s then finalized their practical Drama examination on Friday. Our third Year 7 Experience Day, so ably organized by Mrs Miller, was a great way to provide next year’s Year 7 students with an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the College, our academic program and secondary school expectations. A particular thank you to all the Year 10 students who did such a fantastic job serving lunch, assisting with activities and providing positive leadership on the day.
Our leadership selection process is now underway and the Year 11 students will be choosing to nominate for leadership positions and playing their part in the leadership selection process over the coming weeks. I wish each of these students well regardless of whether they choose to nominate or not. I am positive that there will be a great pool of high quality candidates for these positions.
Last week I promised to share 6 tips for future proofing your teenager’s education. These were from an article that I read in the Q Weekend. 2 weeks ago.
These 6 tips are as follows:
- Digital Footprint-Think carefully about your child’s digital footprint. Once it’s out there, it’s out there forever.
- Accept the new in Education-Be flexible about routes from education into work.
- Find the tailored way-Personalisation will be the key for the future. Increasingly apps and online platforms will offer tailored solutions.
- Quality not Quantity-Exams plus social capital will secure those jobs requiring the highest cognitive skills.
- Demand Digital-Ask your school how it is developing your child’s digital skills.
- Hit the Sweet Spot-Harness your imagination then use technology to express it.

Sports update
NCIS Netball, Tennis and AFL 9's
Congratulations to our teams who traveled to Grafton this week for the NCIS Netball, Tennis and AFL.
Unfortunately conditions were not good for playing sport with very heavy rain throughout the day. Tennis was washed out with half the games completed. This was a real shame as our tennis team was strong and I felt were were in the running to place highly in several divisions.
Netball were able to play all games bar the finals in very wet conditions. Congratulations to our Open Team which were equal champions, tying on points with Bishop Druit College, this was a great effort for these girls who have been runners up for the past couple of years. Our under 15's team played well also winning 3 games and losing 2. While our Primary team won 2 games and lost 2 games, this was a great performance from these young girls, some of whom are not regular netball players.
AFL 9's is a new sport to the NCIS program this year for boys. We were able to field 3 competitive teams in Primary, Under 15's and Opens. Our best result was the Open Boys who finished second overall, narrowly going down to Lindisfarne by 1 point in the Grand Final. Our Primary Team was very competitive also narrowly going down to the eventual competition winners Bishop Druitt College. While our Under 15 team which was mostly year 7 and 8 students played well and will be stronger next year against the bigger boys from the other schools.
I would like to sincerely thank our Coaches and Teachers for your efforts coaching our teams in the lead up to the competition and on the day. Our teams were all well prepared and in many cases performed above expectations due to good coaching in the lead up. Thanks to Mr Parks, Mr Pryor, Mr Rogers and Mr Bazzana for your work with our ALF team. Thanks to Mrs Campbell, Mrs Sculley, Mrs Miller and Mrs Shaw for your work with our Netball Teams.
Food Technology
The College is hosting a Food Smart Program. It involves a cooking workshop with a guest chef and an introduction to the program. Program participants implement 6 simple steps to reduce their food waste in the home then provide feedback taking approximately 15 mins.

International Programs
The experience of hosting international students was surprising, educational and emotional. We could never have imagined that hosting these boys would impact our family in such a profound way. The experience taught us as much about ourselves as a family as it did about our visitors. Their questions made us look at the way lived in a different light as well as teaching us so much about Japanese culture and families. We realised how much we took for granted and how much we can learn from others. A truly wonderful experience for us as a whole family and we will be honoured to host again in the future.

IT’S ON AGAIN
Yes it’s that time of the year again when the primary students are rewarded for making good food choices. The campaign will run for three (3) weeks commencing on Monday 3rd September and finishing on Friday 21st September.
Students are required to make a good choice of fresh fruit or vegetables for fruit time/recess or lunch (MAX one a day). It MUST be fresh not fruit sticks, dried fruit etc.
Each student is rewarded for making a fresh fruit or vegetable choice. Students will receive a token card to fill and will receive stickers and a token for each fresh fruit or vegetable choice they make (1 per day max). This year students will receive a bonus sticker for every piece of fruit (.70c) that they purchase from the canteen.
Students will then bring their completed token card (3 tokens) to the canteen to receive a minor prize. Taken cards will then be forwarded to Sydney Markets to participate in the major draw.
