Term 3 | Week 10 | 19-23 September 2022
‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hilltop cannot be hidden… in the same way
your light must shine in the sight of all, so that seeing your good works they will give praise
to God’
Matt 5:14-16
From The Principal
This week we farewell the Year 12 Class of 2022. For graduates, families and teachers it is a time of much joy and celebration but also some sadness as a significant part of the students’ journey comes to an end and they ready themselves to take the first tentative steps on the next stage of their life. It is quite a remarkable transformation that takes place in each graduand from their first days in Kindergarten to their last in Year 12. Each has started school knowing little about reading and writing, unaware of how to tell the time and most likely unable to tie a shoelace and yet they will leave the College this week articulate, confident and ready to take on many new and exciting challenges. It is a wonderful tribute to their parents, teachers and to the students themselves that they have come so far and grown into such fine young men and women.
Over the coming weeks they will prepare for, and then sit, their HSC Examinations and I ask all our families to keep them in your thoughts and prayers throughout that time.
Tickets for the College Musical, Matilda, have gone on sale to the EAC Community this week and with over 300 sold in the first 24 hours, the excitement is clearly building for the event. The show is coming together wonderfully well and the cast and crew have a solid week of rehearsals during the term break as they prepare for Opening Night. Further detail about show dates and how to purchase tickets can be found HERE.
In other exciting news for EAC, it was announced this week that the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby will tour the Northern Rivers next month and within his schedule is a visit to the College to hold a public address centred on ‘Building Peace in Robust Diversity. The presentation will take place on the evening of 13 October 2022 in The Lindsay Walker Centre. Booking details will be announced shortly.
Over the break, Ms Justine Jacobs with a team of 3 staff and 16 students will travel to the Lizard Island Marine Research Station to learn more about the Great Barrier Reef and to participate in data collection to support scientific efforts to understand and support the World Heritage region. This is an incredible opportunity for all involved to learn more about the incredible ecosystem and the contribute to its protection. We wish them well and look forward to hearing of their adventures when they return.
Finally, I wish to congratulate and thank all our students and staff for their efforts and enthusiasm throughout Term 3. It has been another dynamic and eventful term and I am sure our students and staff are looking forward to a well-earned break.

Principal
OFF THE DEPUTY'S DESK
'You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know.”
Dr Seuss
This wonderful phrasing from the Dr Seuss story book 'Oh, the places you'll go!' featured prominently this week at both the Year 12 Retreat and in the Year 12 Graduation speech of our departing College Captains. As they prepare to sit their High School Certificate examinations in a few weeks before stepping out into the world, we know they are well equipped for the journey ahead. The EAC values of Learning, Leading and Living sit well with the words of Dr Seuss’ well-loved poem that explores themes of self-confidence and identity. It acknowledges future failures and inspires the reader to keep working hard. I would recommend it to one and all.
That inspiration to work hard came this week to the Primary School in the shape of the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service who visited EAC last Monday morning. The visit was a huge success with excited and curious students welcoming the helicopter crew. They presented a donation from a College barbeque and had lots of questions answered, including “Where is the toilet on the helicopter?” What a great way to start the week - a week full of welcomes and farewells.
It has been a long term and no doubt all EAC students, staff and families are looking to a few weeks of rest and relation. May you all have a safe and happy break.

After School Sports Programs a Hit with Students
This terms the College has been proud to offer two after school sports programs - Basketball and Volleyball - and both have proved popular with students.
Basketball was played each Thursday afternoon and open to students in Years 3 to 6.
Meanwhile our secondary students enjoyed some great volleyball matches each Tuesday.
These programs have been developed to maximise the use of our fantastic facilities including The Lindsay Walker Centre and in response to suggestions from our College community. We look forward to bringing more programs in the future so if you have any suggestions or requests, please let us know!

Early Learning Centre Corner

Brothers and Sisters, Choppers and Cheers
This week has given our Early Learning Centre students some great opportunities to mix it with The Big Kids. Our little ones get so excited with every visit. For those with big brothers and sisters the excitement is 2-fold as the very same siblings they argue with at home, suddenly acquire celebrity status amongst the little ones.
An especially exciting moment this week was the opportunity to join Primary students for the visit by the Westpac Life Saver Helicopter. The children were delighted to get up close to this great machine, meet the crew AND share the experience with their friends and family members from 'over the fence'.

Primary Pulse

Some Days are Diamonds
Some days go like clockwork. Students arrive, greet their friends, file into their classrooms, learn everything about everything and head home. Some days an $18 million helicopter lands on the College oval and suddenly the horizons widen and students throughout Primary swiftly change their dream job to one that involves being winched out of a chopper on the top of a mountain. Yep, some days are just like that I guess!
Other days see classrooms transformed into airplanes and the Discovery Centre become home to an international travel expo. These days see the penny drops with students that there are real life countries and people beyond Australia's shores. These days also see parents, grandparents and carers connect with their children's learning and delight that they'll have so much more to talk about when the topic of 'What did you do at school this week?' comes up.
Other days still see the youngest present the oldest with cards and flowers to wish them well as they graduate leaving not a dry eye in the house.
Yep, some days are diamonds.

Year 4 Takes Off
Year 4 students have had their heads in the clouds a lot lately... in a great way! Classes 4A and 4B have worked hard this term on their Geography which culminated this week in the eagerly anticipated 'Mystery Flight & Travel Expo'. Parents, grandparents and carers dutifully arrived with ticket in hand to board their 'flights' and were transported to all the various countries surrounding Australia. World class movies were shown, produced by the students of course, there was singing thanks to the Junior Choir and lots and lots of enthusiastic facts shared.
Mr Falvey and Ms Armstrong were rightfully enormously proud of students' efforts.

Secondary Scoop

~ The Class of 2022 ~
This week we celebrated our fabulous Year 12s and the end of their formal education. Over their lifetime, students have spent approximately 520 weeks at school and participated in an enormously wide range of activities.
The New South Wales Education Standards Authority have outlined some statistics linked to student enrolment in the 2022 High School Certificate (HSC):
- There are 76,399 students entered in the 2022 HSC assessment program
- The most popular subjects are English, Maths, Biology and Business Studies
- The most popular language studied is Japanese
- The most popular Vocational Education and Training (VET) course Hospitality
- The most popular names for 2022 based on student registration are Joshua and Jack for males and Emily and Olivia for females
On Wednesday our valedictory class stood on stage in The Lindsay Walker Centre and together we celebrated their achievements and reflected on the character traits of an Emmanuel Anglican College student. At EAC we seek to grow each student to become a person of character who is inspired by excellence and adaptability, whose life is modelled on that of Jesus, and who, through courage, creativity, compassion and citizenship, strives to create a better world. For the Class of 2022, I know this to be true.
I know we have supported the students both academically and through our wellbeing structure and have promoted in them the skills and capabilities they'll need in the world beyond the College. They'll go on to show resilience, foster creativity and strive to make our world a better place.
We wish them well as they prepare through this holiday period for their upcoming exams and their final journey at school.
Amanda Middleton
Director of the Secondary School

Hi there!
We are Kiri and Nadia, final year nutrition and dietetic students from the University of Sydney and for the past month we've been working with EAC students as we learn more about nutrition together and how best to engage secondary students.
As part of our studies, we have created a series of 10-15 minute webinars that are all about how to support your teenage child's health and nutrition. We both strongly believe that if good nutrition could be bottled, it would be the most powerful medicine in the world - we hope these webinars help you believe this too!
These webinars will soon be uploaded to the EAC YouTube channel so watch this space for your invitation to check them out.
SESSION 1: HOW YOUR DIETS ARE IMPACTING YOUR CHILDREN
Description: Studies show that one of the biggest determinants of a child’s eating behaviour is dictated by what their parents eat. In this webinar we will take you through what healthy eating really is (and no, it’s not just eating more fruits and veggies, although that’s part of it!) and ways to improve your own diet to subsequently help your child choose and enjoy balanced, nutritious foods.
SESSION 2: BODY IMAGE
Description: ‘Body image’ is formed by the thoughts, feelings, attitudes and beliefs we have about our bodies and how we look. There is a big expectation these days to look a certain way, largely driven by social media and peers. These unrealistic expectations can influence your emotionally vulnerable teen(s) to enforce strict eating habits on themselves to achieve their ‘picture perfect’ bodies, whether that’s having defined muscles or being thin. In this webinar we will discuss how you can support your child through creating positive food environments that foster a good relationship with food and their body image.
SESSION 3: NAVIGATING FOOD PACKAGING
Description: Choosing what to buy at the supermarket is becoming more and more challenging. Creative marketing tactics, trends, cost, size and confusing ingredients lists are all influencing our decisions. This webinar will take you through misleading marketing labels, how to interpret nutritional information, and ingredients to look out for. We will also be breaking down the ‘Health Star Rating’ commonly found on packaged foods and will teach you how these scores are calculated.
SESSION 4: EXPOSING THE ‘FINE PRINT’ OF FAD DIETS
Description: Everyone claims they have the secret to quick and easy weight loss - but there is always information that is conveniently left out. In this webinar, we will explain what they don’t tell you about these diets. We will also discuss how you can navigate the nutrition space on social media to stay better informed for your own health and your children’s health too!
SESSION 5: GUT HEALTH - WHY IT’S SO IMPORTANT
Description: There is an overwhelming amount of research that is showing how crucial of a role our guts play in our general health and wellbeing, ranging from immunity, to skin health, to mental health, to hormonal regulation and more. This webinar dives deeper into why we should be taking care of our guts and what you can do at home for you and your children.
SESSION 6: “SO WHAT SHOULD MY TEENS ACTUALLY BE EATING?!”
Description: If you watched all our webinars you may be feeling overwhelmed with all the new information we have given you. Although we can’t yet empathise with the difficulty of parenting, we can certainly help with the food side of things. This webinar will summarise ROUGHLY how much your teens need to GROW and FUEL their lives, and practical + budget friendly meal and lunchbox options that help achieve a balanced diet.

Get Ready 2023!
Our next meeting is 6.30pm Tuesday 18 October and all are welcome to come along. At this meeting we will set our Calendar of Events for 2023 and we would like your feedback and input for what promises to be a really fun year.
And don't worry... we're a friendly bunch, our projects are fun and don't take up much time.
Our Friends meetings are also a great way to share ideas and opportunities and give feedback on how the College can make life a little brighter.

So Long Rev Sal
Rev Sally Miller has been the heart and soul of Emmanuel Anglican College for more than 10 years and today we say 'thank you and farewell'.
Rev Sal is off to sprinkle her stardust on her hometown parish of Casino and we couldn't be more delighted for her.
Over the years, Rev Sal has come to mean so much to so many and a guiding light to all. One need only sit in on one her story time sessions to see the life she brings to the gospel and the inspirational impression she leaves on children and grown ups alike.
Rev Sal's office has been a place of support, grace and raucous laughter and we will miss her greatly.
Our search has started for our next College Chaplain and we look forward to bringing you more news on this front in Term 4. Whoever comes next will inherit a College that cherishes our Chaplains and a community that is all the better for having had Rev Sal as one of us.
Rev Sal is a wonder, a leader, a blessing and we are blessed to have had her as our College Chaplain.
Thank you Rev Sal, for everything.
