Term 3 | Week 8 | 5-9 September 2022
'I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.'
Timothy 4:7
From The Acting Principal
As an Anglican College community we acknowledge the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the titular head of the Anglican Church. She was the first and only reigning British monarch to visit Australia. We acknowledge her life as one of faith, service and resilience; values which we espouse in our own College community.
With only a few days left before Mr Tobias returns to the College, I am making the most of my remaining time in the chair and contemplating taking it for a final spin.
When taking on a new challenge the best advice I was ever given was to “back yourself”. They are two words that sound so simple and self-explanatory, yet two words that have remained elusive for so many of us. A high level of confidence and self-belief is not something that can be easily taught. It needs to be owned. Being able to 'back yourself' is about dismissing niggling self-doubts and getting on with the job.
'Backing yourself' involves believing that even if you don’t have the specific skills and requirements for a particular role or big idea now, that you have enough commonsense to learn what you need to know along the way. It is placing yourself in awkward and uncomfortable positions in order to better perform your role or putting your hand up for a new job or opportunity. It is taking risks to get ahead.
So, as I attend the Matilda rehearsals, I will be telling our talented cast to “back themselves” and enjoy every moment of the experience.

Build Up for the Better
We often get caught up in a cycle of competition, watching others tear each other down just to get ahead in life. We miss out on supporting each other, cheering others on and building others up. This even happens within school. Sometimes it is healthy competition, but sadly at times we forget about the importance of encouraging each other to be the best person we can be.
Thessalonians 5:11 says: '...therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as you are already doing.'
So, how can we build each other up?
- Encourage one another: A simple act of encouraging one another and telling people how much we appreciate them, support them or displaying kind gestures towards others.
- Listen with intent: Another way we can build each other up is to simply listen to what the other person has to say. Not only listening halfway, but rather listening fully and intently. By having eye contact, asking questions and not interrupting someone it allows the person to express themselves.
- Share your knowledge: Everyone is knowledgeable about something, so why not share it with others? Sharing knowledge helps the other person to grow and develop and makes you feel good. Sharing knowledge also builds trust and forms a deeper bond between you and the other person, allowing you to feel more connected.
- Offer Support: The greatest feeling comes when someone feels that they have someone to count on to be there for them in good times and bad. We all need to feel cared for, and this is one of the best ways to build each other up. This can be done by listening to the other person, offering help when needed, checking in with the person and encouraging them.
- Focus on the positive: It goes without saying that each person has their strengths and flaws. Try not to focus too much on the flaws and more on the positive attributes that individuals hold. You can motivate and build each other up through positive affirmations, spending quality time together or shared experiences.
So as we move into the final two weeks of Term 3, when we maybe tired and need a break, let’s consider each other and work to build each other up and encourage each other to be the best we can be.

Sports Round Up
EAC Netballers use Teamwork to make the Dreamwork
Last week saw our star Primary Netball teams head north to Tweed Heads for the annual NCIS Netball Tournament.
Each of the three EAC teams - Primary Boys, Primary Girls and Primary Mixed - performed brilliantly. They also performed consistently with each team losing just one game during the tournament and achieving Runner Up in each of their divisions.
The team's College spirit, teamwork, enthusiasm and focus was evident and their behaviour and cooperation exemplary.
Well done Team EAC Netball. We're very proud of you all.
EAC Riders Weather the Storm
With a small contingent of seven riders, the Emmanuel Anglican College Mountain Bike Team attended the AusCycling Schools National Cycling Challenge from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 September.
Teams attended from as far as Wagga Wagga and Mackay and have previously come from as far away as Broome and Perth.
Road Racing Event
On Friday, Hayden Kelvin and Finn Robinson took part in the road race in which Hayden placed sixth in Years 7/8 Category 1 (Beginner/Intermediate) and Finn managed an impressive fourth in Years 9/10 Category 2 (Intermediate/Advanced).
Mountain Bike Cross Country Olympic
The weather deteriorated on Saturday which meant wet and slippery conditions for the Cross Country. Five hardy riders braved the conditions to achieve some impressive results.
Miley Spencer - Sixth in the highly competitive Years 7/8 Girls Category 2
Finn Robinson - First in the Years 9/10 Boys Category 1
Hayden Kelvin - Seventh in the Years 7/8 Boys Category 1
Archie Cook - 20th in the Years 7/8 Boys Category 1
Angus Cook unfortunately had to retire with a mechanical issue
Challenge Events
Some additional events for this year were the uphill sprint and team relay. Finn was the only EAC student to compete in the uphill sprint and he achieved an excellent second in the Years 9/10 Category 2 competition.
Gravity Enduro
Sunday was more conducive to riding but still remained slippery from the rains on Saturday. Archie, Hayden and Finn were joined by Jett Beck and Angus Carter for the Gravity Enduro leg of the competition.
Jett Beck crashed but managed 22nd in Years 9/10 Category 2
Finn Robinson came 12th in Years 9/10 Category 2
Angus Carter came in 31st in Years 7/8 Category 1
Archie Cook achieved 29th in Years 7/8 Category 1
Hayden Kelvin was an impressive ninth in Years 7/8 Category 1
Overall Results
Overall results, not forgetting some competed in only one event for the weekend, are as follows:
Hayden Kelvin - Fourth in the Years 7/8 Boys Category 1
Archie Cook - 39th in the Years 7/8 Boys Category 1
Angus Carter - 48th in the Years 7/8 Boys Category 1
Miley Spencer - 13th in the Years 7/8 Girls Category 2
Angus Cook - mechanically retired
Jett Beck - 38th in the Years 9/10 Boys Category 2
Finn Robinson - 3rd in the Years 9/10 boys Category 2
This small team managed to propel Emmanuel into seventh position overall beating many larger and more established teams from upwards of 80 other schools across the country.
Well done to all riders who took part in the race and I look forward to fielding an even bigger team at next year's event.
Justin Cleverley
Mountain Bike Coach Extraordinaire
If you are a secondary student interested in joining the MTB team for the first time in 2023 please send Mr Cleverley an email at jcleverley@eac.nsw.edu.au roughly outlining your riding experience.

Countdown to 'Stellarphant'
Our Secondary Drama, Primary and Early Learning Centre students are all abuzz at the moment as the countdown comes for next week's performance of 'Stellarphant' by Meerkat Productions.
Based on the 2022 Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) shortlisted book Stellarphant and The Detective's Guide to Ocean Travel by James Foley, the show is sure to be a hit with our Primary students.
Meerkat Productions have been regular highlights of the College's entertainment and education programs over the years and thanks to COVID, their regular performance schedules were impacted over the past two years. We're all very excited to be welcoming the cast and crew back to the EAC.
Performances will be held on Tuesday 13 September at the College so keep an ear out for reviews from your Primary students.
Students from 2B have been busy preparing for the show creating some great masks ready for the audience participation part of the show.

How to... Access the Business Directory
The EAC Business Directory showcases local business owned or operated by members of our College Community. The Directory is a great resource to use when searching for great local goods and services that benefit our Northern Rivers economy.
The Directory is found on the EAC website under 'Online Services' then 'Parent Services'.

Early Learning Centre Corner
Bring on Spring
The change of season has been a key focus for the Early Learning Centre this week with changes apparent in our garden and the hope at least of warmer days ahead. Students have not only been exploring the traditional seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter but also the seasons observed by indigenous Australia including our local Bundjalung people. Australia's seasons are often much more nuanced than those of the northern hemisphere and we've been learning to look for calendar plant and animal activity to give us clues that change is coming.
The mood of the Centre is certainly a happy one too at the moment with children exploring friendships and a great feeling of harmony in our playground. We're certainly ready to say 'Bring on Spring'!
Primary Pulse
EAC Debaters Best of the Best
We are so very proud of our Primary Debating Team who narrowly lost out in the HICES Junior Division State Grand Final on Thursday 1 September.
The team made it all the way to the grand finals held at Central Coast Grammar School although they missed out (by a whisker) on the 'top gong', Montague Hewitt impressed so much that the judges awarded him the title of NSW 2022 Junior Debater of the Year. This is an extraordinary achievement and very well deserved.
The topic for the final debate was that 'Young offenders should always receive a sentence of community service rather than prison'. EAC was assigned to argue the affirmative against Oxley College.
The team included Stella DuPlessis - Speaker One, Montague Hewitt - Speaker Two, Henry Drew - Speaker Three and Aurelien Rignault - Speaker Four.
Some other fun facts around the HICES 2022 Competition;
- 50+ schools entered a team
- 275 teams in total
- 55 Schools in the Junior division
- Over 1100 students involved
- Distance between furthest schools in the competition 1200km
Full STEM Ahead for Year 5
This term Year 5 have been visiting EAC's science labs in the Secondary school once a fortnight much to the student's delight.
These sessions have been facilitated by Dr Justine Jacob, who has been an amazing guide, providing interesting, engaging and hands-on experiments for the students.
Year 5's Dash Pizzol gave this great round up of the initiative;
"In Science class we've been learning about bunsen burners and looking at insects through microscopes. We have also done fun experiments that Dr Jacob has given us. It has been really interesting learning about cool, new stuff that we found really amazing."

Secondary Spring
Students across Secondary are now busy preparing for, and sitting their end of term exams which is keeping everyone busy and focused, students and faculty alike. Year 12 are moving towards the completion of their school studies, Year 11 have their eyes firmly on all things leadership and our Year 7s are excitedly prepping for their camp next week.
Both Year 7 and Year 11 will be experiencing the Coffs Coast Adventure Centre next week, though on different days. This great venue will serve as backdrop to some great discussion and activity for both groups as they experience these important rites of passage.
Meanwhile, this week's awareness activities for R U OK Day were a resounding success with Secondary students raising more than $200 for suicide prevention with their Spring Bake Sale. Crazy Socks Day was a hit too with most across the College sporting some wonderful socks that might otherwise have never seen the light of day!
