‘Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it: but anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it’ Matthew 16:24-15
From The Principal
Thank you to all the parents, students and teachers who were involved in the parent and teacher meeting, held over 3 evenings last week. A large number of parents took advantage of the opportunity to meet and discuss the learning and development of their children with class and specialist teachers. It was a great exercise in collaborations and partnership, centred on promoting the learning opportunities of the students. Thank you to the staff for being so generous with their time, many staying back past the scheduled finish times to see additional parents or have extended conversations about student progress. It is a fresh semester and I encourage all families to speak with their children to help them establish some learning goals for the second half of the year.
Planning is well underway for the 2019 College year and this week there were many new faces visiting the College as part of the Kindergarten Experience Day. Experience days are a very important part of the Transition Program which is designed to support both students and families as they work through the process of establishing themselves positively in a new learning environment. Students get to know the teaching staff, familiarise themselves with new routines and most importantly, make new friends. A huge thank you to our Kindy teaching team Mrs Roxanne Kent and Mrs Jody Baker for all their preparation and organisation of the day.
Once again, thank you to all our families that have hosted our international visitors this term. Our visitors from Kasukabe High School and Tachibana Elementary School were so grateful for the welcome and hospitality provided by our community. Thank you to all the families who have graciously opened their homes to the visiting students. The program involves students undertaking English lessons, attending mainstream classes and exploring the local region. Our students are also enjoying the opportunity to make new friends.
Can I encourage all our families to purchase a raffle ticket (or even a book!) in our major fund raiser for the year. First prize is a brand new Toyota Corolla and ticket sales are limited to 5000. It is a great chance to win an incredible prize and also support the construction of the Multi Purpose Centre. Tickets (and books of tickets) are available through the College office.

Off the Deputy's Desk
This week sees our Year 12 students undertaking their trial HSC examinations. We wish them well during this time of stress and pressure but also hope that they will have the presence of mind to keep the exams in perspective. I remind our students that they have many avenues of support available for them should they need assistance with study skills and examination techniques. They are not alone and we are all wanting the best for them in this process.
We are presently in the midst of Eisteddfod season. I am truly in awe of the amount of work that the staff and students have put into preparing for the Lismore and Gold Coast Eisteddfods. I hope that they all perform to the best of their ability and that they ‘break a leg’ in the 2 eisteddfods. The cultural program of the College is gaining great traction and I look forward to sharing some fantastic results from these eisteddfods. I thank Mr Holmes, Mr Cleverley and all of our music staff for their commitment to the development of the music program at the College.
All good independent schools should develop a service orientation in their students. At Secondary SRC, the students have decided to devote the profits from the next secondary social to ‘Buy a Bale’ in order to support drought affected farmers. I also hope to have each PC group involved in a practical service activity to support farmers through the packaging of food packages and I hope to share the plan for this with students and staff in the near future.
Very shortly, our Year 8 students will soon be involved in the process of selecting elective subjects for Year 9. This represents the first step towards allowing student voice in subject choice and students begin to make the journey towards specialization in areas of personal interest. I thank Mrs Boyd for her excellent organization of the subject selection process and encourage all of Year 8 parents and students to attend the upcoming information night to be held next Wednesday 15 August. I hope to see many of you there.
Finally, it is almost NCIS Athletics Championships to be held at Coffs Harbour our team has been training early mornings and Tuesday afternoon and we hope that the team will acquit itself well at the championships. Best of luck to all the students who will be malking the journey to Coffs and thank you to all the staff who have been so committed to supporting the students in their endeavours.
I look forward to sharing further news of the achievements of our students over the coming weeks.

Early Learning Centre News
The Early Learning Centre children have begun to explore watercolours as an artistic medium. The children have observed that "too much water isn't very good" and not enough water makes the paints too dry, "I need more water 'cause it's sticky". However, when introducing a new resource we must model the correct process and tool use. "Keep the bristles all going in the same direction. A shaggy brush ruins our tool". "Remember to wash the brush between each use" and "hold the brush near the metal".
This image shows Kai and Peyton drawing with black tip markers and then choosing watercolours to paint the still life presented on the table. We view all children as competent and capable learners. We empower and enable children's learning and development when we scaffold learning and model techniques for successful tool use.

Mountain Bike Australian Schools Championships
Well done to Hayley Oakes (Year 9) who represented EAC at the Mountian Bike Australian Schools Championships last Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Nerang on the Gold Coast. Hayley competed in the intermediate (Years 9 and 10) division in 4 events, the XCE (Cross Country Eliminator), XCO (Cross Country Olympic), OT (Observed Trials), and XCR (Cross Country relay).
Hayley set the fastest individual female time trial time in the XCE, and when progressing through the eliminator rounds reached the ‘A’ final. Hayley placed 2nd overall in the XCE in the intermediate division.
The XCO on Saturday and Hayley had an excellent start, leading out her age category strongly in the first of 3 laps. But two mechanical issues meant she had to run with her bike the last 2 km and amazingly still managed to finish in 5th place.
The OT was next, and something Hayley has never done before. It consisted of 4 seperate obstacle courses she had to clear without touching the ground more than 3 times. Hayley completed 3 out 4 of the obstacle courses. The OT was essentially an exhibition event this year and didn’t result in any officially recognised winner, but it gained points to an overall school tally. For Hayley, being the only student from EAC, it was an event to ‘have a go at’ and try something new.
Sunday was the XCR, where Hayley competed with 3 other girls (all 4 of them being from different schools). The goal was to complete as many laps of the course in 4 hours. The girls completed 8 laps in the 4 hours, and placed 1st. Due to them being a ‘mixed school team’, no medals were awarded, but they were recognised and stood on the podium as the winners of the intermediate girls XCR event.
Congratulations Hayley on your achievements at this elite level competition as College we are very proud of your efforts.

LOST PROPERTY
This term there has been an extraordinary amount of lost property collected from around the school grounds. If your child is missing any uniform items including hats, jumpers, jackets or plastic containers, drink bottles or lunchboxes please come to the office and check if your lost items have been found.
It is preferable that all items brought to school are clearly named so that in the event they are misplaced they can be returned.
Secondhand Uniform Shop
The Secondhand Uniform Shop is open on Tuesday afternoons between 2.30pm and 3.30pm in the Ezzzy Centre. Due to HSC trial exams the uniform shop will not be open on 14 August.
Year 10 students who have not signed up for the blazer fitting with School Locker are encouraged to visit the secondhand uniform shop as there are a range of used blazers available.
