‘Set your hearts on the kingdom first, and all these other things will be given you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow: tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own’
Matthew 6:33-34
From The Principal
I am delighted to be able to confirm that last Thursday morning the Regional Development Planning Panel formally approved the College’s development application to construct the Multi Purpose Centre. This is wonderful news for our community. The facility contains indoor courts, a stage and performance area, a dance room, a strength and fitness centre, foyer, office, servery, significant storage areas as well as toilets and change rooms. It will comfortably seat our whole community for celebrations, performances and assemblies. It is a much needed and well deserved facility for our students. The next part of the process is to finalise construction documentation and move to the Tender process in order to award a building contract. We aim to open the Tender process early in September with a view to commencing construction prior to the end of this year. We anticipate a late 2020 opening of the incredible facility.
The first of our international tour groups have arrived and are enjoying their sample of Australian life and education. Last week we had students from our sister school Long You Kema High School, China and also Kasukabe Senior High, Japan. Thank you once again to all those families who offered home stay places to our international visitors. Your generosity and hospitality is greatly appreciated. For the families of students who are travelling, it gives them great comfort knowing that our own school families are looking after their children. We will have more visitors from both Japan and China in the coming weeks and we look forward to the new friendships that will be forged between our community and our sister schools from abroad.
Thank you to all those parents that attended the Primary Athletics Carnivals last week to cheer on the students, help with running events and serve in the canteen. Your support is greatly appreciated. We had a beautiful day and the students’ behaviour, cooperation and level of participation was excellent. There were also some amazing personal bests, with a number of new records being set. Thank you to Mr Graham Walker and all of the staff and parents involved in the running of the day.
We have our fingers crossed for good weather this Friday for the secondary carnival.
I would also ask you to keep in your thoughts and prayers our Year 12 Students who are preparing for their Trial HSC Examinations which commence on 5 August. This can be a particularly challenging time for them and we ask God to be with them and support them at this significant point in their educational journey.
Finally, congratulations to Year 10 student Lachlan Walker who won bronze in the 100m backstroke and was 4th in the 50m backstroke at the Australian School Swimming Championships in Melbourne this week. Lachlan earned his place in the NSW squad via the NCIS and CIS pathway. An absolutely amazing effort. Well done Lachlan!

Off the Deputy's Desk
Welcome back to all of our families to Term 3 and we have hit the ground running with Primary Interhouse Athletics on the first day back. I congratulate all of the Primary students on their wonderful house spirit, commitment and involvement in their carnival. I also would like to thank Mr Graham Walker and Mr Randall Evans for all their work with the overall organisation of the carnival. Despite a late start we were able to finish the carnival on time and with maximum participation from the 4 houses. This Friday, 2 August it will be the Secondary’s turn for the athletics carnival and we are hoping for another day of great competition, a close result and a beautiful day of fine weather.
In the Secondary we started the semester with a secondary assembly where Ella Peart was inducted as SRC Representative for Year 10 to replace Letia Paton who is travelling to the USA on exchange. I wish Ella every success in her role and thank Letia for her positive contribution to the SRC this year. At this assembly Mr Tobias presented certificates for outstanding academic effort throughout first semester. I commend and congratulate the following group of students for achieving an effort rating of excellent in all of their subjects or in all bar 1 subject. Each student should be aiming to give their maximum effort as effort is generally a causative factor in academic success.
Our Year 10 students have undertaken information sessions last week with subject teachers in preparation for their Year 11 subject selection process. I thank Mrs Boyd and the Curriculum Team for their work in organising these sessions and I will definitely be an interested observer throughout the process. On Tuesday night Year 10 parents and students are cordially invited to attend the subject selection information evening where staff will discuss the HSC along with subject selection and study hints for the HSC.
This week is parent teacher interview time and I found a great article from Dr Judith Locke, a Brisbane based clinical psychologist who presents parenting workshops across her Australia. Her book ‘The Bonsai Child’ is an excellent read which provides strategies for modern parents. I have summarized the key points of the article in last weekend's Sunday Mail, by Locke, regarding parent and teacher interviews.
Key questions that parents can ask are as follows:
- Can my child work independently or do they need a lot of attention or reassurance?
- Do they work well with others? Can they lead and can they be led in group work?
- How do they take constructive criticism/ Can they accept and apply it, or do they become overly emotional at re-direction/
- What should my involvement in homework be now? How can I balance assistance with building self-confidence and the ability to tackle tasks independently?
Locke also writes about the need for parents to work with teachers and not against them all the while stressing the importance of building measured and respectful relationships through conversations, active listening and a shared focus on what is best to help your child learn. I look forward to seeing many of you at the interview evenings.
Siena Seymour in Year 12 represented the College at the NSW Youth Parliament during the holidays. Siena was able to engage with the democratic process and engage in high level debate in a simulated parliament style situation. Siena was an exemplary representative for the College and I thank her for taking this opportunity and making the most of it.
Best of luck to all of our students this term, particularly our Year 12’s who have been positive role models for the younger students. I wish them every success as they start the final term of their schooling journey and prepare for their HSC Trial Examinations which commence next week.
