"God loves you and has chosen you as his own special people. So be gentle, kind, humble, meek and patient. 13 Put up with each other, and forgive anyone who does you wrong, just as Christ has forgiven you."
Colossians 3:12-13
From The Principal
Thank you to all of the parents that were able to attend the Parent Information and Welcome Evening last Wednesday afternoon. It was great to see the Ezzy Centre buzzing with great conversation after the information sessions. The evening certainly confirmed for me the great support that EAC enjoys from our families. The staff were also very appreciative of the number of parents that came to the information sessions and introduced themselves on the evening. It was also an exciting opportunity for our new families to connect and engage with our community for the first time. In wonderful EAC fashion, I saw numerous incidents of existing parents reaching out to new parents to simply say hello and welcome.
Research tells us that when parents and teachers build strong relationships and work collaboratively, numerous positive outcomes for students are likely to emerge. Our teachers actively encourage open and regular communication and are strong believers that the sooner a concern or question is raised, the sooner it can be worked through and resolved. If you have any issues, questions or concerns throughout the year, the first point of contact for primary students is the Class Teacher and for secondary students it is the Pastoral Care Teacher or the Subject Teacher. Our policy is that we will return contact within 24 hours of your email or call. Please understand that during the College day, the teachers are in the classroom teaching and may not receive your correspondence or have a chance to respond immediately. I am sure you appreciate that they have lives and families too, and therefore may not have the opportunity to respond to an email sent late at night requesting a response prior to school the next day. For more urgent matters, particularly change of pick up routine and the like, please contact the College office and we will ensure the message is passed on to the students and staff as required.
We were able to take advantage of the break in the weather to hold the secondary school swimming carnival at Alstonville Pool today. I wish to congratulate the students on their enthusiasm throughout the event. House spirit was very obvious on the day with students dressing up in House colours and cheering every race. The level of participation was very high, with many students swimming in multiple races. As race starter I was delighted to see multiple heats in each age group, with many competitors filling all eight lanes! Special thanks to Mr Graham Walker for his organisation and Secondary House Captains for their leadership on the day. Thank you also to all of the parents who joined us at the pool for the carnival. Your support and encouragement of the students was greatly appreciated. Finally, congratulations to our Age Champions on their success. We look forward with great anticipation to our Primary School carnival next week.
Accompanying this newsletter is some information regarding our educational and cultural study tour to Japan which will take place early October, during the term break. The study tour is open to students in Years 8 through to 11 and will provide a wonderful opportunity for students to experience Japanese life and culture. As well as having the chance to practice their Japanese language skills, students will travel to a number of special and unique places, eat some amazing food and experience the incredible blend of traditional and contemporary culture that is Japan. A highlight of the trip will be the visit to our sister school, Meitoku Gijuki and a chance to make friends with students from the school. An information evening will be held on Tuesday 25 February at 6.30pm for those that wish to know more about the tour.

Our Parent Welcome Evening was very well attended and I believe that it is vitally important that staff and parents work together in concert in order to achieve the best for the students. This relationship can be likened to an equilateral triangle with the student being situated at the apex. Parents need to support us and work with us in order to maximise learning outcomes for our students. The importance of this relationship is eloquently summarised by this beautiful old poem titled 'Unity'.
Unity
I dreamt I stood in a studio,
And watched two sculptors there.
The clay they used was a young child's mind,
And they fashioned it with care.
One was a teacher, the tools he used
Were books, music, and art.
One a parent with a guiding hand
And a gentle loving heart.
Day after day, the teacher toiled,
With a touch that was deft and sure.
While the parent laboured by his side,
And polished and smoothed it o'er.
And when at last, their work was done,
They were proud of what they had wrought.
For the things they had moulded into the child,
Could neither be sold nor bought.
And each agreed they would have failed
If each had worked alone,
For behind the parent stood the school
And behind the teacher the home.

Last week students in Years 7-12 participated in workshops with presenters from Elevate Education. The student feedback from these sessions was very positive with very large percentages of each cohort recommending the program to their peers and saying that it was time well spent. This student feedback certainly suggests that we will continue with the workshops in 2021. Year 12 students will have a second workshop before their HSC Trial Examinations and Year 10 students will have a second workshop as part of their transition program at the end of the year.
Some of the topics covered will include the following: time management, memory and mnemonics skill development, use of concept maps, note taking and note making skills and examination techniques. These strategies are all designed to assist students to make small but noticeable gains in academic efficiency and provide an opportunity to enhance their home study program.
Parents and students can access the many resources available on the Elevate Education website by logging in. The password for access is rondo.
Reminders
Year 7 Immunisations
Year 7 immunisations will occur on Monday 24 February from 9.00am. A cover letter and permission forms will go out this week. There are also a small number of Year 8 students who need to have a catch up immunisation due to being absent last year. Parents are asked to return the permission forms to the front office as soon as possible. A quick turnaround allows NSW Health to order an accurate number of vaccines.
School Zone Parking
The Ballina Shire Council has written to us asking to remind parents that rangers are enforcing parking restrictions around the College. I have attached an electronic version of the council brochure that forms part of an education process for parents/carers of school age children. Please take the time to read this document. When it comes to road safety, Council makes no apologies for issuing penalty infringement notices to drivers who break the law in and around school zones. Council appreciates your ongoing cooperation and support to promote school zone safety around our College.
Staff Carpark
Please do not drop off or pick up your children in the staff car park. It is not designed to be a drop off and pick up area and is full of cars by 8.15am. Please use the designated parent drop off areas and car parks. By doing this you teach your children the message that following parking and drop off rules is not arbitrary and it applies to all.
Uniform and Grooming Standards
Your support is required with regards to the College upholding its uniform and grooming standards. Please note that we are running uniform detentions each day in the Secondary for students who fail to adhere to our policies. If students continue to be on uniform detention then it will be considered willful disobedience and higher level consequences will be given. Please support us to maintain our corporate standard in the community and inside our College.
Parents on College Grounds
The College wishes to remind parents that they are expected to sign in when coming on to the grounds. We are always wanting to build positive relationships with parents but by signing in we know who is on campus and for what reason they are here. This assists us in maintaining student safety around the campus.
