"Happy the merciful: they shall have mercy shown to them."
Matthew 5:7
From The Principal
I wish to take this opportunity to formally acknowledge and thank the Friends of EAC for their incredible work and support of the College. Each year the Friends of EAC make a wonderful contribution to building community and raising funds to provide additional resources for the benefit of all the students. On Tuesday evening, the Friends of EAC held their Annual General Meeting and took time to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions that the group has made over the last 12 months. Despite the challenges of COVID19 restrictions and long periods of lockdown, the work of Friends continued.
Without doubt, the highlight of the EAC social calendar for 2021 was the very successful Friends run event, a ‘Grand Affair’. The 1920’s themed event held at Fenwick House in Ballina was a raging success. After 18 months of lockdowns and restrictions, the timing of the event was simply perfect and presented a fantastic opportunity for people to come together, reconnect, have fun and raise funds to support the purchase and installation of audio visual equipment in the multi purpose centre. It was an incredibly successful evening and raised over $24,000.
Lots of parents and friends were involved in the event and contributed in various ways to its success but it would be remiss of me not to mention and thank President Jodie Hayter and Treasurer Vanessa Hansen for the hours of planning and preparation that they put into creating and marketing the event. There was a huge buzz in the community after the event and it again highlighted the importance of the role of Friends of EAC in not only fund raising but also friend raising. I know we are all looking forward to the next Friends social gathering.
Thanks also to Janet Hale, who continues to donate her time so generously in order to keep the Second Hand Uniform Pool operating. It provides a steady stream of income to Friends and a much needed service to the families of EAC.
In March this year, our region was ravaged by two major flood events. The devastation and loss are enormous and the families of more than 90 EAC students along with 16 staff members were severely impacted by flooding. The response from the EAC community has been outstanding, with the Friends of EAC leading the way in terms of the immediate response with food, clothing, school supplies and offers of support to help families with the recovery and rebuilding process. I want to thank all involved with Friends for the compassionate, generous and practical response to the situation. The donation of almost $30,000 raised by the Colour Run initiative will provide further help to those families in need and highlights once again that the Friends of EAC are very much connected to serving and supporting the students and families of the College. The College is really blessed to have such generous and committed people in our community.
The work of Friends can only continue with the commitment and support of generous, skilled and enthusiastic members. As part of the AGM a new committee are elected and I am so grateful to the following people for stepping up to take an active role in the leadership of Friends.
Treasurer: Vanessa Hansen
Secretary: Julie Billebault
Committee: Dani Sarina, Janelle Wilson, Janet Hale, Elizabeth Dwyer, Jodie Hayter, Gretchen Mercer, Sarah Christensen and Denise Randall
As you can see, we are still looking for a President. I know that stepping up to a role like this may seem daunting, however, Friends is a very collegial organisation and everyone supports each other with the leadership roles and the running of events. There are 8 meetings a year and no expectation that the President will be involved in every event. If you want to know more about the role, please email friends@eac.nsw.edu.au and someone from the committee will get in touch.
We look forward to another wonderful year of friendship, fun and fundraising!
On Tuesday and Wednesday this week I travelled to Bornhoffen PCYC Camp at Natural Bridge to spend some time with Year 9 on their camp. While the weather was rather cool (some might say freezing!) everyone was having a wonderful time. Due to COVID19 restrictions and lockdowns, this group of students has not had the opportunity to be on camp since their Primary school days and as a result they were wholeheartedly embracing the opportunity to be on camp. The level of cooperation and respect was fantastic. Clearly the students were enjoying their time away together and delighted to have the opportunity to participate in a number of fun and challenging activities. While away they will all do a number of team building activities, participate in abseiling, canoeing, advanced creeking, hiking (carrying all their equipment, clothing and food) and camping out. With no mobile phones or computers, it will be a week to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with themselves, nature and each other. A huge thank you to the staff team who make all this possible by organising and attending the camp – Mrs Middleton, Mr Hawkes, Mr Rose, Mr Brenton, Mrs Fisher, Mrs Jarrett and Mrs Payton.

When stepping into Mrs Pierce’s Year 4 classroom today I was met with a room full of happy smiling students. For an English teacher like myself, this was slightly unnerving as I have never had an easy relationship with mathematics. But here I found myself in a space where students were enjoying measuring angles and explaining the intricacies of their protractors. As I walked around the room, they eagerly explained their tasks and proudly showed off their responses.
It reminded me of an episode of Sesame Street where the segment showed four students being shown a snake. Three who had never been close to one before found the reptile intriguing while the other child who had been warned by his parents how dangerous they were turned away in terror. All too often in western culture that one child who turns away does so to mathematics. Contrary to the belief of some, we are not programmed to be mathematically proficient because of our cultural heritage. Rather, it is how we condition our children to face new challenges and to believe that with perseverance and hard work we are capable of so much more than we credit ourselves with.
Finding shelter in the English corner of the classroom, I found the story book created by the Year 4’s to explore their world and expand their language. It was a room full of creativity with a cotton tree and bean plants which the students burst to explain in terms of germination and crop production. I must admit I was more comfortable with the language of words and left them in their happy exploration of numeracy.

Safe on Social Media Parent Evening
I am pleased to announce this week an upcoming parent education evening on Thursday 30 June led by the team at Safe on Social, Australia’s most trusted, and in demand Cybersafety and Cyberbullying education, training and consulting company.
From their website:
We specialise in delivering programs that are authentic, factual, conversational and non-fearmongering. We share stories like you have never heard, talk about the most taboo subjects with knowledge and conviction. We'll make you laugh and bind groups together. We are not vacuous or patronising. We're warm, understanding and honest. We share our lived experiences.
Discussing the most current and up to date online safety topics, parents and carers will leave feeling educated and empowered, with a lot of practical information that they can immediately apply to their daily lives.
The Q&A time at the end really providing them an opportunity to personalise the evening and gain beneficial information to suit their individual needs.
This information evening is open to all EAC parents and will be provided free of charge thanks to the Friends of EAC. The session will be held in the Ezzy Centre and will run from 6pm-7.30pm. This is a parent only event.

Year 9 Camp: Bornhoffen
Year 9 students are currently on camp at Bornhoffen. There was much excitement as the camp had been cancelled earlier in the year due to the weather conditions. Even though the weather is cold, the students have really engaged in their groups and got involved in the range of activities.
On the first day, two groups got involved in team building activities including working out how to move from one side of cement to another using wooden planks. Students also had to work out how to pass students through a makeshift spiderweb without touching the rope.
Two other groups were involved in creeking where they built up their resilience in freezing cold water sliding down rocks, climbing over boulders and swimming in freezing pools of water. Even though the water temperature was low, students loved the activity.
Wednesday includes a range of activities including abseiling, high ropes course and two groups going on an overnight trek.
It is great to see the teamwork between students as they spend time without technology, developing life long memories with others in their year.

8.4 Mathematics
Year 8.4 Mathematics has been conducting a first-hand investigation of Experimental Probability versus Theoretical Probability. The students have been working in small groups with dice, coins, cards and random number generator on their calculators. The students found the main difference between experimental and theoretical probability is that experimental probability is based on the actual results of an experiment. In contrast, the theoretical probability is based on possible outcomes based on assumptions. Also, there is a difference in the formula too. In addition to that, in experimental probability, an experiment is performed to gather information, although, in theoretical probability, it does not happen.

Peer Support
Week 5
This week’s Peer Support session focuses on positive self talk. Children need to practise talking positively to themselves. Your child will also learn to persevere, which will encourage them to keep trying in challenging situations. During the week, encourage your child to use positive self talk.

2023 European Tour
The College is exploring the possibility of organising a European Cultural and Education Tour of Italy and Greece in April 2023. Expressions of interest are sought from secondary students and families, via the parent lounge. An information session will be held early in term three if there is enough interest.
Can you help?
Help is needed in the Canteen on the following dates:
Friday 17 and 24 June
Thursday 30 June
Friday 1 July 9am to 11am
Online Canteen Ordering
We are excited to be able to offer online Canteen ordering via the 'School Stream' app. View and select from the canteen menu by clicking on Canteen. This will bring up the canteen order form where you will be able to enter the child's details and select desired items from the dropdown lists under the relevant headings and pay. You will be prompted to tick which break you require your selection for.
All online orders must be completed and submitted prior to 8.45am on the day they are required, to enable Canteen staff enough time to prepare and distribute orders.
Manual Canteen Ordering
If you are unable to use the 'School Stream' App please place the money in a paper bag of sufficient size to fit all of the items. If you are ordering a drink with your child’s lunch, please provide two (2) bags. Please write the information on the LOWER half of the bag. If money is short we will substitute items to the value received.
REMEMBER, if ordering at both breaks, you must have a separate bag for each break. Any change required will be placed in the bag for return with the child’s order. All orders must be received at the canteen before 9.15am.
