Term 2 | Week 3 | 10 May 2017
“Happy the merciful, they shall have mercy shown to them."
Matthew 5:7
From The Principal
Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will sit the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) this week. All students in the relevant year groups across Australia will undertake tests in five areas which include Writing, Reading, Spelling, Language Conventions and Numeracy. The tests provide an enormous amount of data on each individual as well as their cohort. The data collected from the tests is also used to develop understandings about students’ learning from a regional, state and national point of view. While certainly an extremely important and valuable assessment tool, NAPLAN is but one of many assessment tools that teachers and schools use to gather feedback about student learning and development. Assessment takes on many forms and is designed to enable teachers to develop a profile of each student as a learner which includes insights into their learning styles, preferences, strengths and areas for development. The greatest understanding of a student is achieved when the many and broad range of data that teachers have access to is used to form a profile of the student.
Recently the NESA - NSW Educational Standards Authority (formally known as BOSTES) announced that all students undertaking the HSC from 2020 onwards will be required to demonstrate a minimum standard in Reading, Writing and Numeracy. Students will have opportunities in Years 10, 11 and 12 to demonstrate the minimum standard but can also pre-qualify by achieving a Band 8 result in the Year 9 NAPLAN testing. Students and parents in Year 9 have recently received information about the new minimum standard. There is no expectation for students to reach the minimum standard prior to Year 12, but it is highly likely that many students will achieve this standard prior to Year 12. The College will have access to the data regarding student achievement of the minimum standard and will provide additional support to students where necessary. Students and families should not be concerned about the new minimum standard or the NAPLAN tests. The College will continue to support student learning and provide excellent opportunities to promote and enhance the learning of all our students. Further information about the minimum standard is available on the NESA website. If you have any specific concerns you can speak with your child’s teacher(s), one of the Curriculum Leaders or Mrs Mellissa Evans.
Due to the unpredictable weather, we were forced to take shelter in the library last Thursday to complete the students’ class and individual photos. Due to the wet ground and low light a decision was made to postpone the Whole College Photo. We are currently finalising a date to reschedule this event. Information about the new date will be available shortly.
Congratulations to our 4 debating teams who traveled to Lindisfarne on Friday afternoon to undertake round three of the HICES debating competition. All students that have been involved in the competition have presented themselves with distinction and I congratulate them on their efforts to present their case, speak in front of an audience and work as a team. I am very pleased to announce that our Stage 3 team was undefeated and have been crowned Northern Region Champions. They will now progress to the zone finals. Thank you to Mrs Sue McLintock, Mrs Karen Bergan, Mrs Jess Raguse and Mr Chris McCotter for their involvement in this new initiative and the support, encouragement and guidance they have provided the students.
Finally a reminder and special invite to all our mums and grandmothers to come and share a cuppa and some cake on Friday 12 May from 7:30am to 9:30am at the Friends Mothers' Day Breakfast Tea in the Ezzy Centre.

In terms of the sports uniform, we have recently had questions regarding socks and the sports jacket. There is no need to purchase the sports jacket, however, if a student wishes to wear the jacket it can only be worn with the sport uniform.
Until recently we were unable to source EAC sports socks, so allowed a plain white sock with the sport uniform. EAC sport socks can now be purchased from the School Locker. We will transition to this sport sock over the remainder of the year. If you need to purchase new sport socks for school we ask that you please purchase our official socks from the School Locker.
NAPLAN 2017
Minimum Literacy and Numeracy Standard
Students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will this week sit the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing and numeracy. For our Year 9 students this is the first of a number of opportunities they will have to demonstrate the new HSC minimum standard for 2020. NESA CEO David de Carvalho has explained in a recent NESA News release that whilst some year 9 students will achieve the minimum standard on one or more of their reading, writing and numeracy tests this week, many others will have three more years of learning and many more opportunities to reach the standard by the HSC.
NESA modelling suggests the majority of Year 9 students will pre-qualify for the HSC minimum standard in at least one of the three areas via the upcoming NAPLAN tests, and that the vast majority will demonstrate the HSC minimum standard in all three areas by Year 12. “NESA understands that students learn at different rates and we expect that the majority of students will be sitting at least one of the short, online reading, writing and numeracy tests in years 10, 11 or 12,” Mr de Carvalho said.
The new online literacy and numeracy tests will be available from 2018 and teachers will work with students to decide when they are ready to attempt each test and once each test is passed it will not have to be sat again. The HSC minimum standard is set at a level of literacy and numeracy that will support students in meeting the academic requirements of their HSC subjects, and day-to-day life after school such as writing job applications, follow operating instructions in equipment manuals, comparing prices and understanding percentages, understanding lending offers, managing personal budgets and navigating websites.
We wish all of our students all the best in their NAPLAN tests this week.

Bill Turner Cup Soccer Round 2
Last Friday EAC played the second round of the Bill Turner Cup Soccer Competition in Ballina. The Bill Turner competition is a state-wide knock out competition for boys and girls who are under 15. In the Second round both our boys and girls teams played against Xavier College. Unfortunately, both teams were beaten - the girls 7 to 0 and while the boys were very competitive, were unlucky to go down 2 to 0. Stand out players on the day for the boys were goal keeper Ryan Richards and for the girls Stella Atkinson.
All the students enjoyed the experience of playing in the Bill Turner Cup. Thank you to Mr Brenton and Mrs McClelland for coaching the teams.
