“So it is with Christ's body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.”
Romans 12:5
From The Principal
I am delighted to announce that the Friends of EAC are planning a special event to both friend raise and fund raise that will take place on the evening of Saturday 19 June, 2021. It will be a night of glamour, fun, food and friendship as we aim to raise funds for the purchase of audio-visual equipment for the Multi Purpose Centre. Further details about this exciting event will become available in the coming weeks, but for the moment I encourage you dust off your suit, book nan and pop to mind the kids and ‘save the date’!
Thank you to Mr Walker and the Sport and Coaching Team for their organisation of the College Cross Country Carnival. The weather was perfect and the participation rate right across the College was very high. Congratulations to our Age Champions and place getters who fought out a number of very tight finishes across the age groups. Thanks also to Friends of EAC for running a drink and snack stall and for those parents who were able to drop by and support the students. The staff reported that the students were very cooperative and that participation rates were very high. It was great to start the term with a community event and an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful weather together.
Thank you to all those parents who have downloaded the School Stream App over the last week. While initially, the App will enable families to make and pay for canteen orders, overtime we plan to rollout a number of features of the App that will enhance College communication. This would include event reminders and updates for specific groups (class, year, school, sport, band etc) and whole school notifications. Correspondence was sent to all families at the start of this term, outlining the process for downloading and setting up the App. If you need help with setting up the App or have some questions about how it works please contact the Administration Manager, Mr Neil Whiteing via the College Office.

Principal
Off the Deputy's Desk
The term is in full swing now and we have just completed one photo day with the second one on Monday 10 May. Photo day usually means that the change in the weather and season is occurring and that the weather is getting cooler.
Last Friday we held a very successful day of Cross Country at Saunders Oval. There were some wonderful performances in the races and I would like to thank our sports staff and maintenance staff for their efforts in organising and running the carnival. The weather was perfect and it was great to see a contingent of parents watching the races in a COVID safe manner.
NAPLAN testing is now approximately 2 weeks away and our Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 students will all be involved in NAPLAN. Mrs Boyd has spent a large amount of time planning the timetable and this will be sent home soon and is also available on the College calendar. It is essential that all students in these year levels are well prepared for NAPLAN by having plenty of sleep, eating well and giving their best effort in the tests.
This week also finds our debating teams travelling to Coffs Harbour for Rounds 1 and 2 of the HICES Debating Competition. EAC has a proud tradition in debating and of progressing a long way into the competition. Thanks to all the students who have demonstrated such a positive interest in this higher-level thinking activity. Debating is unique as it is a non-sporting competitive activity that involves a high level of teamwork. In that aspect it is not dissimilar from many sports. Debating however, requires high level mental rather than physical application and skills. Thank you to Mrs Campbell, Mr Walsh and Ms McLintock for all the time that they have been putting into preparing the teams for this round of debates.
Finally, a good news story about our students who travelled to Armidale for NCIS Football. Some staff from a smaller school wrote to us saying how helpful and friendly our students were to their students. The students from the other school were at their first large competition and were a little overawed but our students were very supportive. In an era of education where character development is so important, it was lovely to receive that feedback.

NCIS Secondary Football (Soccer) Championships
EAC was represented by 60 enthusiastic soccer players at the NCIS Football championships in Armidale on Tuesday last week. The team travelled out the day before with a training session in the afternoon and an overnight stay in the New England Girls School boarding house. The tournament was hosted by The Armidale School (TAS). Whilst the weather was brisk, it was a nice day for soccer with clear skies and fantastic playing fields.
Due to the wet weather our teams have found it difficult to train this year however they still demonstrated a high level of skill and certainly commitment for each other out on the field. A special thank you goes out to our team coaches, Mr Brenton, Mrs McClelland and Mrs Britton for their time, effort and enthusiasm, it is appreciated by students and the Sport Team.
A huge congratulations to our students who played with passion, determination and sportsmanship, with one school providing the following comments about our students:
"Our soccer team were very inexperienced and lost every game convincingly, however they had a great time and all commented about the support and sportsmanship they were given from your EAC students.
It is so encouraging to have students understand and demonstrate kindness and friendship."
Comments made about our U/15 Girls Team.
Overall Results
Under 15 Girls - 2nd: The Under 15 Girls played strongly all day and narrowly went down to Lindisfarne College in the grand final.
Under 15 Boys - 3rd: Playing in a very tough competition this year the Under 15 Boys were unlucky not to make the Grand Final as they had a draw in their Semi Final and only missed out on making the Grand Final based on a goal difference count back. The boys won their playoff for third against Bishop Druitt College easily.
Open Girls - 3rd: This team was the surprise package of the tournament playing very well in every final. Whilst they did not make the final they finished the tournament well by easily defeating the home TAS open girls team.
Open Boys - 2nd: Well done to our Open Boys who played well all day and were only narrowly beaten in the Grand Final by Lindisfarne.
As a College community we should be very proud of these students who represented their school with pride.

Primary Inter School Touch Football
Last Thursday EAC hosted Holy Family Primary Catholic School (Skennars Head) for a gala fun day of inter school touch football. The gala day followed 4 weeks in Term 1 of touch football focused sport lessons with all students keen to test out their touch football skills. The games were played at Saunders Oval in Ballina on a beautiful autumn day under clear blue skies. EAC had five teams comprising a mixture of Year 5 and Year 6 boys and girls. All the students had a fun time and played their games in good spirit and demonstrated great sportsmanship.
This sporting event was also the final selection trial for our NCIS touch football teams who will compete in June at the Primary NCIS tournament in Ballina. Congratulations to those students who have been selected in the NCIS teams.
A special thank you goes out to Ms Craig, Ms Kelvin, Mr Falvey, Mr Evans and our specialist touch coach Alan Kirchen for coaching the teams and the Secondary student referees Nkosi Malaba, Lily Smith, Priya Singh-Pangly, Chloe Neilson and Jack Whitaker.

Online Gaming and the Digital World
Teenagers are digital natives. They have 24/7 access to technology with some children sleeping with technology or participating in online gaming as a way to connect to their peers. Online gaming can be great fun for children but there are many risks that need to be managed.
The positives of online gaming include that it is a fun way to improve coordination, problem-solving and multi-tasking skills and can help build social skills through online connections with other players. Gaming was a wonderful social outlet during COVID lockdown as it allowed for connections with peers and is a great outlet for some students with additional needs to make connections.
The Office of E-Safety statistics on online gaming are:
- 81% of children aged 8 to 17 have played an online game
- 64% have played a multiplayer online game with others
- 52% have played with people they did not know
- 17% have experienced bullying or abuse while playing a network game with others
- 34% have made an in-game purchase and this rose to 45% when they played a network game with others
As a parent it is important that we monitor and ensure a safe gaming environment for children. Some simple tips include:
- Locate the computer or games console in an open area of your home, or if your child is playing on their handheld device, get them to do it in the family room.
- Activate parental controls and safety features on the device or in the app or browser. These controls can help restrict access to certain content and limit spending on in-game and in-app purchases.
- Help your child to protect their privacy online - get them to use a screen name that does not reveal their real name.
- Teach your child not to click on links provided by strangers, like ‘cheat’ programs to help with game play, which might expose their device to viruses or malware.
- Agree on strategies to help them to switch off, like a timer that signals game time is nearly over, with consequences for not switching off.
In this digital world where there are risks of violent or sexual content or language and inappropriate content within games it is important to stay involved with your child and their gaming. Steps that can be taken include:
- Talk regularly with your child about their gaming interests and who they play with online. Help them understand the risks.
- Play alongside your child to get a better sense of how they are handling their personal information and who they are communicating with.
- Monitor the time your child spends online and keep a look out for any changes in their activity, school or social behaviours.
- Encourage your child to tell you if they experience anything that worries them or makes them uncomfortable.
There is no magic number of hours, but your child may be spending too much time playing games if their gaming starts to have negative impacts on them or your family.
Look out for signs such as:
- less interest in social activities like meeting friends or playing sport
- not doing so well at school
- tiredness, sleep disturbance, headaches or eye strain
- changes in eating patterns
- reduced personal hygiene
- obsession with particular websites or games
- anger when being asked to take a break from online activity, or appearing anxious or irritable when away from the computer
- becoming withdrawn from friends and family
In some cases, setting firm limits as a family may be enough to help address too much gaming. But there may also be underlying problems like depression and anxiety that are linked to problematic internet use.
If you are concerned about your child’s gaming, it might be a good idea to get some professional advice. Try talking with your GP. Keep in mind that gaming might not be the cause of the changes but used as a way to deal with another issue.
It is important that children develop healthy habits with their online gaming, playing at appropriate times and being respectful in the online world. It is also important to report to the Office of Esafety if your child has had negative experiences with online gaming so that this can be investigated.

Ballina RSL ANZAC Day 2021
The College Captains attended the Ballina RSL Anzac Day Commemoration and Wreath Laying Ceremony on ANZAC Day. The Commemoration Address by GPCAPT Dr David Scott OAM who has been a serving member of the Royal Australian Air Force Reserves since the 1990s. He spoke about his time helping in war zones and major events and the importance of the Airforce to military operations.
As the Captains laid the College wreath, the F/A-18F Super Hornet flew over to mark 100 years of service of the Air Force to Australia.

Primary Update
It was wonderful to see the students rise up to meet the challenge of the Cross Country last week. As Mr Parks says, Cross Country is about resilience and I was so proud of each and every student who completed the course, whether in first or last place. Last week we also marked ANZAC Day at a special ANZAC Service led by Alyssa Wilson, Braith Cahill and Rev Sal. Braith also joined Taz Sauderson to play the Last Post and Reveille at the service which again showed great confidence and skill amongst our student group to step up to such a task.
Fads come and go through Primary Schools and at present it is the fidget toy the Poppet. Teachers have their own class rules about how to best manage these items and we ask that if your child does have one that it is clearly named or initialed. The same applies for anything that a child brings to school to share with their friends. At times, items such as these are banned by schools if they cause too much disruption to student learning or happiness in the playground. We are monitoring these Poppets and the Pokémon card craze so that they only add to a student’s enjoyment, not the opposite. Please also speak to your children about taking care of their property, not swapping with others and the risk that they may lose an item when bringing it to school.
I look forward to seeing our Kindergarten and Year 1 parents at the Mini Cross Country on the Main Oval on Friday at 10am. It will be a short event but if you wish to attend you are free to do so. We are watching the skies with inclement weather predicted, and will make an announcement by Thursday night if we do have to postpone.

Walker Fundraising BBQ
As you may know, a family in the school community tragically lost their house and all of their belongings in a house fire just before Easter. The family is slowly getting back on their feet from the wonderful support by family, friends and the community. In continuing to support the family, Walker House will be running a lunch time BBQ on Friday 7th May, raising money to purchase school supplies to support the educational needs of the family's daughter. In order to raise enough money, I am asking if any families could generously donate sausages, bread or softdrinks to the BBQ. If you are able to do this please let Chris Lake (clake@eac.nsw.edu.au) or Reverend Sally Miller (smiller@eac.nsw.edu.au) know.

Please contact Christine Hall if you are ableto help in the Canteen on Fridays.
Canteen Menu 2021
The Canteen menu complies with the NSW Healthy School canteen strategy. Further items will be added as the year progresses and the Winter Menu will be available in terms two and three.
Please note that items change in price from time to time.
Online Canteen Ordering
We are excited to be able to offer online Canteen ordering via the 'School Stream' app. Please refer to the recent letter to all families with instructions on how to download the app to your phone, tablet or computer.
Once the app is installed you will be able to view and select from the canteen menu by clicking on Canteen. This will bring up the canteen order form where you will be able to enter the child's details and select desired items from the dropdown lists under the relevant headings and pay. You will be prompted to tick which break you require your selection for.
All online orders must be completed and submitted prior to 8.45am on the day they are required, to enable Canteen staff enough time to prepare and distribute orders.
Manual Canteen Ordering
If you are unable to use the 'School Stream' App please place the money in a paper bag of sufficient size to fit all of the items. If you are ordering a drink with your child’s lunch, please provide two (2) bags. Please write the information on the LOWER half of the bag. If money is short we will substitute items to the value received.
REMEMBER, if ordering at both breaks, you must have a separate bag for each break.
Any change required will be placed in the bag for return with the child’s order.
All orders must be received at the canteen before 9.15am.
Emergency Lunch
At times, for various reasons, students may require an emergency meal (basic sandwich), this will be provided with a canteen note sent home requesting payment, please send in the money to the Canteen ASAP.
