Issue 17 2023
‘For those who have been given much, much will be expected’
Luke 12:48
From the Principal
Well, the final bell has rung for the ‘Class of 23’ with the HSC examinations wrapping up this week. Just for the record, Physics was the last paper and we had 18 budding young scientists seeing their own HSC out with the last examination across the state. It brings to a close their official school learning journey and marks the beginning of the next stage of their life. They will all now have a chance to celebrate next Wednesday evening as they come together one last time at their Formal. As we congratulate them on their achievement and bid them farewell, we pray that their lives will be rich and rewarding, and full of much love, happiness and success. Congratulations and good luck Year 12, 2023!
Term 4 is always a very busy term with a number of significant events and celebrations. I encourage all families to view the College calendar, available via Parent Lounge, and to note the dates of those significant events so that you can place them in your diary to assist with planning during this busy time of year. In particular I want to highlight Friend’s Freaky Friday on Friday 17 November commencing at 3.30pm. The afternoon is designed to be a fun family afternoon with activities and rides, disco for Primary students and food. Further details about how the afternoon's activities are available in this newsletter and tickets can be purchased HERE.
I also remind all families that Friday 10 November is a Staff Professional Development Day and as such it will be a pupil-free day for Kindergarten through to Year 12. All staff will be involved in program writing and development to both meet the demands of the new NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) syllabuses and planning around our own integrated, real world curriculum model.
As we race rapidly towards the end of another year, we are also actively planning and preparing for 2024, and so I ask those families that are looking at moving their children to another school to formally notify the College of their intentions. This will both help with our planning and also avoid any fee penalties for late notice of withdrawal. Please direct your correspondence to our Registrar, Kate Jenkins, via kjenkins@eac.nsw.edu.au

Off The Deputy's Desk
Friday 27 October was International Teachers’ Day and in Australia the theme was 'Teachers: leading in crisis, reimagining the future'. In the journey of the young people in our care we are all teachers and Emmanuel College draws us together to create curious and resilient young people who are excited and prepared to live meaningful lives for the betterment of others.
Our methodologies are often shaped by the teachers who had an impact on or lives, who shared their insights and words of wisdom. It is on such days that we can reflect on their influence on our journey and on the support we now give our students and children. It is the teachers in our lives who endeavoured to understand us and our concerns, who taught us lessons about life not just subjects, and who inspired us to go forward to create businesses, bring up our own families or even to return to the classroom as teachers.
So reflecting on International Teachers’ Day, who are the people who influenced you the most? Remember them fondly as you go about your day.
Below is a link to our draft Parent Code of Conduct and we welcome your feedback as we finalise the document. Should you have feedback, please email me directly at fmcguigan@eac.nsw.edu.au.

Primary Inter-House Basketball Competition
This week, the sports department ran the highly-anticipated final installment of the Primary Inter-House Sporting Series as all Year 3-6 students took to the courts of the Lindsay Walker Centre for some fast-paced, high intensity basketball.
Congratulations to the following houses who took out their respective competitions:
Year 3 - Walker
Year 4 - Purcival
Year 5 - Walker
Year 6 - Smith
Points are accumulated for every game throughout the two day event, and an overall winner is declared and will have the honour of having their house engraved on our perpetual trophy. Stay tuned, the overall winning house will be announced at our next Primary Assembly.
Thank you to our wonderful Year 9 students who gave their time to referee this competition: Georgie Buchanan, Charli Fowler, Ben Morgan, Oscar Priivald and Leiila Rintala.
Netball NSW Schools Cup - State Finals
Next week, our Year 8 Boys Netball team head to the big smoke as they compete in the State Finals of the Schools Cup competition, held at Netball Central in Sydney Olympic Park.
This is an historical moment for EAC as it is the first time we have had a team reach the state finals in any sport. The boys have been training hard under the guidance of Ms Brigette Campbell and Mrs Heidi Miller. On behalf of everyone at EAC, we wish the boys the best of luck and look forward to hearing how they go.
EAC TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
In Week 3, we saw 27 Primary and 27 Secondary students compete in the 2023 EAC Tennis Championships. They were two fantastic days with lots of great moments shared amongst the students. Thank you to Mr Paul Pyror and Mrs Julie Beavis for your support attending the events.
Overall Primary Champions - Annie Docherty & Jack Higgins
Overall Secondary Champions - Alice Palmer & Paco Schultheiss
Selections were made for our EAC NCIS Tennis team taking place in early 2024.

GUESS WHO'S COMING TO TOWN?
As you may have heard, Mary Poppins is coming to EAC in 2024.
Please let us introduce you some of the incredible talent leading the production.
Lulu Miskin is a classically trained singer and has completed both classical and musical theatre singing examinations. She has studied at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA), Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP), Screen Wise, Sydney Dance Company and Brent Street over the past 15 years to hone her craft.
Lulu’s passion for music has lead her down many exciting avenues, from performing internationally as a member of a chamber choir, to conducting at the Sydney Opera House.
Lulu teaches musical theatre classes and is a private vocal coach at a number of local performing arts academies. She finds great joy in sharing her passion of performance with the younger generation.
Some of Lulu’s theatrical credits include Annie (South Sydney Musicals - Molly), Into The Woods (Kambala productions - The Witch), Hair (Bangalow Theatre Company - Crissy), High School Musical (Byron Casting - Taylor Mckessie) and The Beast (Bangalow Theatre Company - Assistant Producer & Stage Manager).
HERE TO HELP
WORKING AGAINST AND WITHOUT VIOLENCE
“Because whatever has happened to humanity; whatever is currently happening to humanity, it is happening to all of us. No matter how hidden the cruelty, no matter how far off the screams of pain and terror, we live in one world.”
Alice Walker (Author “the Color Purple”)
Violence dehumanises. It dehumanises the victim. Obviously. It also dehumanises the victimiser. Watching violence is also dehumanising. Passing by (or turning away) is a choice available to those with distance. However, choosing not to notice or not to care also diminishes our humanity. It is with this in mind that I dare speak of the crisis in Israel Palestine.
Standing for Palestine does not mean standing against Israel. Standing against Hamas and its practice of terror while hiding behind a civilian population does not mean standing for the collective punishment of a civilian population and their systematic destruction.
The terror of 7 October is the context for Israel’s brutal violence. There is also a context for Palestinian uprising which is decades of occupation and dehumanising practices against Palestine and Palestinian. I am not lauding the use of violence, just pointing to the soil from which it springs, noting that violence begets violence.
We live in a culture that is heavily invested in the myth of redemptive violence, just watch any major action film. Christianity can be, and has been, co-opted into this lie. The church in many places happily swaps out the Saviour who hangs from the tree of human violence for a king who rules with brute force. The lie of violence is seductive. The Christian message is its undoing. If Isaiah is to be used as a narrative for understanding kingship, the image from Isaiah 2 is compelling.
Come, walk in the light of the Lord:
He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes…
they will beat their swords into ploughshares
and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.
As a broad Christian principle, there is no flourishing for ‘us’ apart from ‘them’. The only way some can ‘flourish’ while others flounder is through the use of walls and the backing of state sanctioned violence.
Any language that describes a group of humans as less than human is the necessary prequel to state led ethnic violence. It was used in National Socialist Germany in the thirties, Rwanda and former Yugoslavia in the nineties. It can be heard on the lips of Hamas leaders as well as the lips of Benjamin Netanyahu this last week past.
There are things we can do to stay human:
- Confront and challenge any degrading, derogatory or bullying language, anywhere.
- Use language and call for a ceasefire.
- Lament. Weep and allow grief to speak into our lived lives and feel for the children who long for a home without war, Israeli and Palestinian.
- Practice the love of Justice in every place and moment.
Put the prayer of St Francis into practice...
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

Canteen Counter
The Countdown Begins
With the College year coming to an end, the College Canteen will be cutting back on ordering so that excess stock is not being held over the Christmas break.
This will begin in Week 7 (week commencing Monday 20 November).
As stock sells out, items will be removed from School Stream.
Never fear though, fan favourites chicken goujons and pies will continue to be available to the very end!
Thank you for your continuing support of the Canteen in 2023.

HOW TO... ADVISE THE COLLEGE OF EARLY HOLIDAY DEPARTURES
It is that time of year again when holidays beckon and family commitments loom large.
If your child will be finishing the College year prior to Wednesday 6 December, please advise us by emailing attendance@eac.nsw.edu.au.
For students in Years 4 to 12, please also write a signed note in their Planner advising which day will be the student's last day at College for 2023. This will ensure any end of year procedures, including the return of working materials, are carried out and any unnecessary absentee notices are not sent.

GETTING READY TO GROW
As we approach the exciting end of year period, many parents and their little ones are eagerly anticipating the transition from the Early Learning Centre to 'big school.' This transition is a significant milestone in every child's life, filled with both excitement and nervousness. Our ELC educators are working to ensure that this journey is as smooth and enriching as possible for both children and parents.
While the transition to 'big school' in 2024 may be nerve-wracking, it is also a time of tremendous growth and opportunity for children. Early Learning Centre educators are here to guide, nurture, and inspire the next generation, ensuring they embark on their new adventure with confidence and a love for learning.

KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS ON A SPECIAL MISSION
On Monday morning and throughout the day on Wednesday, our Kindergarten Teachers Christine Smith and Meagan Kelvin embarked on a heartwarming adventure to nine local Day Care centres across the Northern Rivers, including Byron Bay, Suffolk Park, Lennox Head, Bangalow, Clunes, Ballina, and right here at our very own ELC. Their mission? To connect with our soon-to-be Kindergarten stars and get to know them better.
During their visits, Christine and Meagan observed the children in action, engaged in conversations with their current educators, and shared stories and laughter. It was a fantastic opportunity to understand each child's unique personality and learning style, setting the stage for a smooth transition into the EAC family.
This outreach was not just about the teachers getting to know the children but also a chance for the children to become more familiar with the warm and caring faces they will soon call their teachers. This endeavour is part of our commitment to creating a nurturing environment where our students feel safe, valued, and excited about their learning journey. They even had the chance to refuel with a quick coffee break by the beach.
Our Year 6 students are gearing up for an unforgettable adventure at the Year 6 Camp, scheduled from November 14th to November 17th. This year's camp promises to be an extraordinary experience as our students explore incredible sites like Australia Zoo, K'Gari Island (Fraser), the Brisbane River, and Sea World. I can't wait to hear all about the memories they create during this unforgettable trip and thank the staff in advance for leading this tour.
Excitement is building for the upcoming 'Friends Freaky Friday' event, which will take place on the evening of 17 November. This fun-filled event promises to be a fantastic night for our students to come together and enjoy activities, games, and a sense of camaraderie.
Kindergarten and Year 1 students are looking forward to their Mini Athletics and Cross Country afternoon to be held on the afternoon of Tuesday 21 November from 1:30pm. Select Senior Students have volunteered to run a fun filled afternoon of games. Parents are warmly welcomed to this event to be held on the Senior Oval. More information will be emailed home to families next week.

KEEP THOSE HATS ON!
Hats are important as we head into the warmer months. There is no doubt that spending time in the ‘great outdoors’ is part of the Australian way of life but if you fail to protect your skin in the sun you could be getting more than you bargained for.
Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world due to high levels of ultraviolet radiation. Remember, it doesn’t have to be hot to be a ‘high UV day.’
As the hotter months are upon us, the College will be strictly enforcing the wearing of hats in the playground, during PDHPE and sport lessons. School Locker has a supply of hats available as does the Friends of EAC Second Hand Uniform Shop. It is important that all Secondary students wear a hat.
Other steps recommended for safety outside include the use of a SPF 30 sunscreen or higher and seeking shade if possible.

Director of the Secondary School
Preparation for Inter House Showcase
This term each Wellbeing class is busy working on their performance for the Interhouse Showcase.
Last year was the first year that each House created a performance in which all students were involved.
The new Year 12 cohort (Class of 2024), have been busy working with their Leaders of House on a theme for this year's showcase and each year group have brainstormed and started working on these ideas.
We are all looking forward to seeing the final performances in December.
READ ALL ABOUT IT: EAC NEEDS YOUR NEWSPAPERS
