From the Principal
Over the last two weeks, the Executive and I have had the privilege to read the Semester One Reports for Kindergarten to Year 11 and we are all so proud, humbled and delighted with the level of commitment of the students to their learning, their extra curricular involvement and their desire to embrace to the values of our community. There are just so many great news stories in the reports of excellent effort, high achievement, overcoming challenges, participating in College life and demonstrating College values. The students should be very proud of their efforts and learning gains.
The Mid Year Report provides families with an excellent opportunity to reflect on the student's learning journey for the first half of the academic year, to celebrate the efforts and outcomes of the semester and to set goals for the semester that lies ahead. I commend the reports to you and am sure that they will be a source of much discussion over the kitchen table during the term break. Parent and Teacher Meetings will take place in Week Two of next term and bookings can be made through the Parent Lounge.
As we come to the end of the semester, I wish to acknowledge the teaching staff who have so generously and skillfully given of their time and talents over the semester to provide the incredible plethora of fun and engaging learning opportunities for our students. Each student report contains a list of extra curricular involvement and as I read through the list of sporting, curricular, academic, service and leadership opportunities I was reminded of the vast number of 'out of classroom' initiatives that our teachers create and support for the benefit of the students. The staff at EAC are wonderful and we are so blessed to have such a passionate and generous team of teachers.
There has been much excitement and fervour across the College over the last week as we showcased the incredible musical talent of the students throughout the Festival of Music. From the opening night through to the incredible Finale Concert, it has been a wonderful celebration of student (and staff!) talent. The quality of the performance, the breadth of repertoire and the enthusiasm with which the students played has made it a joy to be an audience member. The week long event also included talent quests, piano recitals, choir performances and shows from the Mezzo Band and Emmanuel Concert Band. Congratulations to all the students involved in the performances – you were incredible!
Special thanks to all of the parents, grandparents and visitors who attended performances, I know you enjoyed the opportunity, and the students appreciated the generous audience. A huge thank you our Festival Director, Mr Wayne Cross, the music tutor team and to Mr Justin Cleverley and Mrs Shandelle Crozier for your leadership and support of the students. Special thanks of course must go to Mr Adam Holmes whose passion, vision and dedication to the students are the inspiration on which the Festival of Music is built.
I hope all our students, staff and families have a wonderful mid year break and look forward to all the excitement that the second semester has to offer. Staff will be involved in a Professional Learning Day on Monday 17 July. Students from Kindergarten to Year 12 will commence Semester Two on Tuesday 18 July.

WHAT WEEK IS IT?
To help clarify our College weeks, we've created a printable quick reference guide available HERE.
Off The Deputy's Desk
When former US President Barack Obama was asked to share his most important career advice for young people, he replied... "Just learn how to get stuff done." It's a simple yet powerful answer. You can talk about things all day, but the power lies not in what you say, but in what you do.
Well in the last two weeks of Term 3 at Emmanuel Anglican College, we got a lot of 'stuff done'!
The Festival of Music has been centre stage with our College bands performing two evening concerts and numerous students participating in workshops and talent competitions. It was wonderful to see so many talented students performing to audiences of their parents and peers. All those hours of practice certainly paid off!
As a part of this term’s Year 4 Integrated Studies program, students have had the opportunity to explore the intricate processes involved in bringing food from the paddock to our plates. Collaborating in teams, the students designed restaurant styled menus with creative dish descriptions, they put their artistic skills to work designing and setting formal dinner tables and presented two main courses and desserts. The students were guided by the secondary students, who shared their expertise and helped present restaurant quality food and services. This experience fostered cooperative learning among the students, an exciting method of demonstrating their learning and the opportunity to use the secondary kitchen facilities with the mentorship of their older peers.
Year 5 students have been exploring the Solar System this term. In their final science lesson, the students undertook the ambitious task of designing and launching a rocket from the Earth to the Moon. After many attempts and improvements, they managed to successfully get a spacecraft into lunar orbit.
So with such a busy term coming to an end, it is time to rest, recover and reenergise. However your family spends the coming school break, may you have a safe and happy time together.

Bill Turner Trophy - Round 4 Win v Lindisfarne
Our U15 Girls Football team recently faced Lindisfarne in Round 4 of the Bill Turner Trophy on our home field. Coming off a 2-1 victory over Xavier, our girls were keen to test themselves against a traditionally strong Lindisfarne outfit.
In a very even contest, EAC were able to score midway through the first half thanks to the speed and clever touch of Frankie Moir-Dobbs. Some missed opportunities from both sides saw us enter the break 1-0 up.
As expected, Lindisfarne came out firing in the second half, looking to level the score. The back four of EAC held firm, foiling any chance of a Lindisfarne comeback. Final score 1-0 to EAC.
Thank you to the vocal home crowd who really got behind the girls and provided a terrific atmosphere for the match. The team will now progress to the Regional Final against Trinity Catholic College in Lismore on Monday 31 July. Good luck girls!
Sport Selections
Sport selections for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 have now been finalised for Term 3. Students timetables should soon reflect their allocated sport. If students wish to change their sport, they need to complete this Change of Sport Request Form before the end of Week 2. Sport changes will only be approved if there is sufficient room in the preferred sport.
HOCKEY STARS SELECTED FOR STATE
Congratulations to Finnigan Robinson and Kalani Franklin, Year 10, who were both selected in the NSW All Schools U16 Boys Hockey Team and Coco Robinson, Year 8, was selected in the NSW All Schools U16 Girls Hockey Team.
All three students were in Bathurst last week representing NSWCIS at the selection trials. They will all now travel to South Australia from August 12-19 to represent NSW at the School Sport Australia Championships. This is an incredible achievement that everyone at EAC is extremely proud of.
NSW Juniors XV Selection
Congratulations to Milos Safranek who was selected into the NSW Juniors XV following his performance for NSW Country at the recent NSW All Schools Rugby Union Competition in Sydney.
Milos will now return to Sydney next week to compete in the Australian Schools Rugby Championships, vying for a place in the NSW Gen Blue team.
Sarah Vanem
Congratulations to Sarah Vanem who was recently selected in the Queensland U13 State Water Polo Team. She will now head to Hobart in July for Nationals. This is a credit to Sarah who has been training hard and travelling to Brisbane each weekend for team training.
TEAM EAC RIDES WITH FLARE
Flying through a cold state forest early on a Friday morning might not sound like much fun, but 36 of our finest Mountain Bikers did just that and came out the other end with some seriously great results.
The students, ranging from Years 7 to 10, rode their hearts out over the three stages to post their best time on each. Students and the half dozen parents who attended kept up to date with fastest times via the live stream on the event website. This made for an exciting day and quite a good motivational tool for riders to improve their results.
Energy and excitement around Wedding Bells State Forest was high as were the aerial manoeuvres on display, but the Cross Country stage proved difficult for many.
This ride was an opportunity to see the trails that will be used for the NCIS event on 31 August and not all about winning, but of the 152 riders from 30 schools entered, we came away with the following results:
Miley Spencer: 2nd in Year 9/10 Girls
Coco Beck: 2nd in Year 7/8 Girls
Amelia Atkinson: 4th in Year 7/8 Girls
Amelia Polidano: 5th in Year 7/8 Girls
Charlotte Strahan: 7th in Year 7/8 Girls
Tallulah Cook: 9th in Year 7/8 Girls
Jack Lawson: 6th in Year 9/10 Boys
Jett Beck: 10th in Year 9/10 Boys
Max Wiggins: 11th in Year 9/10 Boys
Noah McIntosh: 13th in Year 9/10 Boys
Luca Folscher: 13th in Year 7/8 Boys
There were so many other great rides and all teaching staff are very proud of all the riders who took part in the first race of 2023.
At the end of the day, EAC came second in the overall school point score which is our best result to date.
The absolute best part of the day was hearing from the owner of the coffee and food van that our students had the best manners of any of the schools there on the day! Well done to all students for this.
It will be an exciting race at the end of August and we hope to have a full strength team for that.
A big thank you to all parents who helped with bike transport on the day. It made the whole day possible.

ELC STAFF SET TO SHAVE FOR A CURE
Our very own Ms Woolcott has bravely volunteered to represent the Early Learning Centre in EAC's 2023 Shave for a Cure.
Following an extensive consultation process with both the Whales and Dolphins rooms, a vote was cast with options for a 'trim', a 'cut' or to 'shave it all off'. With a considerable margin, the 'shave it all off' option was a clear winner.
It is now up to our EAC community to support Ms Woolcott's quest by raising $250 to donate to Cancer Council.
Donations big and small are welcome and can be made in cash at the Early Learning Centre.
Thank you for supporting this great cause that is close to the hearts of all of us here at EAC.

WIZZ KIDS
Last week, students from the Early Learning Centre came to Year 5B to learn about using technology as part of the EAC Kindy Links program.
First, the ELC students had to colour in a picture of a butterfly or a motorbike rider, a clam or a bird. Some students got to colour lots of them in!
Then, once they had completed this, using an app called Quiver, the Year 5 students put their iPads over the top of the picture that the ELC students coloured in and their picture came to life in 3D using augmented reality in the colours that they had chosen.
After this, the Year 5 students helped them to write a sentence or two about what was happening in the picture.
Finally, Year 5 printed their 3D pictures to remember their experience.
It was wonderful to see the excitement on their faces when their drawings came to life and the connection that the students made through the session.

What a Disaster!
This week, Year 5 Drama put on their final 'Natural Disaster' group performances to end a successful fun unit on Playbuilding.
With the use of coloured material, students created their own narrative of a natural disaster ranging from bushfires to tsunamis.
The focus of the task was to encourage students to use drama techniques such as narration, signage, mime and language to enhance the meaning of their play. The performances were engaging to watch and one group even incorporated a song turning their piece into a musical!
Next term Year 5 and 6 Drama will experience using scripts and more techniques in performance.

DRAMA LIGHTS UP
Year 9 Drama students had a great time learning about special effects make up and character make up in class recently. The focus of this learning activity is to integrate real life skills from the performing arts industry into the classroom. The students were also treated to a backstage tour at our local theatre, Ballina Players, and a sneak peak of their current sold out production of Priscilla. The students were thrilled with the tour and seeing all the hard creative work that goes on behind the scenes in a musical. Thank you to Alex Geikie (Secretary) and Pete Harding (Vice President) for giving up their time to chat to our students about putting on a show like Priscilla.

BRISBANE MOULIN ROUGE EXCURSION
Another early start for our EAC Drama crew (Years 9, 10, 11 and 12) as they headed up to Brisbane for an acting workshop with industry professionals Shake and Stir and the musical Moulin Rouge. It was a wonderful day and the students enjoyed Moulin Rouge taking note of the fabulous set design, precision choreography and the clever weaving of popular pop songs into the narrative. The bus ride home saw the students singing the hits from the musical. Thank you to Drama teacher Ms Sue McLintock for coming along.

FEELING CONNECTED TO THE OUTDOORS
This semester, our Year 10 Outdoor Education class has been learning about and exploring the wonders of nature and enjoying the unique benefits of recreation in natural environments. We have had the amazing opportunity to surf the pristine beaches and hike the beautiful bush tracks of our local community on a weekly basis. These experiences have made us realise how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful area with the chance to participate in fun and healthy outdoor adventures. People from all over the world travel to witness the picturesque views of the Byron Lighthouse or have the chance to surf The Pass and we are doing it in our practical classes! It's truly amazing.
Outdoor activities in natural environments have many mental, physical, social, and spiritual health benefits that exercise in urban areas doesn't provide. We have read peer reviewed studies in class that have proven the added benefits of exercise in nature including, reduction of anxiety or stress, increased motivation, connectedness, social interactions and so many other positive health benefits that lead to enhanced wellbeing. We have experienced first hand that outdoor activities really do increase your motivation to exercise, so next time you think about exercising, go for a trail walk, try surfing or swimming at your local beach, you won't regret it. We are all so beyond grateful for these experiences and opportunities given to us by EAC this year.
Thank you Mr Tobias and Mrs Fisher for supporting this subject and allowing us to study Outdoor Education with Mr O'Grady. It is a great addition to the Year 10 electives and we hope more students get the chance to do this.

HEADING INTO HISTORY
Last week, students from Year 12 Modern History, Ancient History and Extension History, travelled to the 2023 Coffs Harbour HSC History Student Day.
During the day, students were given the opportunity to attend a variety of presentations with expert speakers across all 3 history subjects and were provided with valuable tips and hints for the upcoming Trial and HSC Examinations. Students were accompanied on the day by Mr McDonnell and myself and we were so proud of the way that they conducted themselves. They represented the College so well!
It is always so special to see students engage so enthusiastically on days such as these and to display their love for history.

MIKALA CAMPBELL ACHIEVES A DISTINCTION AT BOND UNIVERSITY
I recently attended the Bond University Year 12 Business Extension Program and the experience was not just eye opening but also inspiring. It involved many different assessments and business presentations/pitches that were graded over the course of the two day program. This gave me a taste of what I can expect from university and would highly recommend this program to anyone interested in business and entrepreneurship. I was lucky enough to be rewarded a distinction following the completion of the program.

QUEENSLAND COURT VISIT
Our Secondary students for Legal Studies and Money Matters recently journeyed to Brisbane for a special visit and tour of the Queensland Court Precinct which includes the Brisbane Magistrate's Court and the Supreme Court of Queensland. The visit included a meeting with one of the Court Judges and viewing a number of court cases. This fascinating excursion deepened the students' understanding of the workings of a courthouse and the complexities of the justice system in Australia.
The group rounded out the day trip with a guided tour of Brisbane which visited the sites of various historical crimes that have occurred in the City of Brisbane. The students were transfixed!

여러분 안녕하세요 MEANS HELLO EVERYONE
On Tuesday 12 June, Lily Boyd and I travelled down to Sydney to attend a lesson day for Korean Beginners with the NSW School of Languages.
First up, we had the opportunity to meet our teachers and other students partaking in the course. Upon arrival, everyone met at the Korean Culture Centre near ChinaTown in Sydney's Central Business District, where we were taught about traditional Korean houses 한옥 (hanok), were able to try on traditional clothing 한복 (hanbok), and learnt how to do a ceremonial bow 세배 (sebae).
Our teachers then took us all to a Korean restaurant for lunch where we got to test out our ordering skills in Korean and enjoy some authentic cuisine.
Afterwards, we went to an Education Centre to practice speaking for the upcoming exams (화이팅).
Overall it was an incredible day, immersed in Korean culture and fun learning experiences. Definitely worth the long trip!
감사합니다!
